I lost my pretty boy Jiraiya today...to help cope, I felt the urge to do a speed paint of him and wanted to share. It's just not the same without him...

So there's a hurricane. Remember to do your prep

Wont lie, this one snuck up on me. This one likely isn't going to do much damage to anyone but just in case, here are a few things to keep in mind for this storm or the next

  • do your water changes a day or two before you expect the storm to hit. A well cared for tank should be able to make it till after any possible power outages and boil advisories. Products like SeaChem Prime can also buy you a couple of days if it really comes down to it.

  • Try to have dry food on hand. The last thing you want is to only have soilent green turning green in your fridge if the power goes out for a long time

  • Bring any outside fish or floating plants indoors. The last thing you want is major flooding and for them to swim away.

  • Think about lowering your pond. This is really going to come down to your build. I lower my pond about a foot when we're expecting a storm.

  • Think about bringing any filtration systems inside. This is once again going to come down to your system. I have an above ground pond with the filter sitting right next to it. For this storm I'm not going to move it but for bigger storms where i'm bringing everything inside versus just out of the way, yeah, it gets moved in too.

Be safe. Enjoy the good rain :)

Do stunted goldfish need the same size tank as full grown ones?

Posted: 01 Aug 2020 09:49 PM PDT

Warning for neglect of fishes that I'm trying to do my best to correct.

I have three goldfish, all carnival prizes from when I was much younger and unfortunately didn't know a single thing about keeping fish- let alone goldfish. One is about 8 years old and the other two are probably 5 years. They have been kept in my dad's 20 gallon tank all their lives and as such are much much smaller than they normally would be. The 8 year old is probably 5 1/2 inches and the other two are about 4 inches.

My dad was pretty much the only one taking care of them and was the one who spent any money on the tank and the fish so I just haven't had any budget for goldfish needs or a tank. I moved back to my parents house for a couple reasons but the fish had stayed there with my dad while I was at school. First thing I noticed when I got back is that one of the fish had no fins except for his tail. I asked my dad when that happened and he said he never even noticed.... So kind of had a rude awakening that maybe my dad didn't actually know about fish keeping despite being the one who bought the tank and wanted to do all the work. I did some research to try and figure out what reasons a fish's fins would disappear and figured it was finrot and that cause is usually bad water/tank maintenance. I've been doing some more research to figure out how I should be keeping goldfish and learned that I was very very wrong in what I thought goldfish needed :(

That brings me to my current issue. I still am on a very tight budget but I want very badly to get these fish the tank they need. They're common goldfish not fancies. I really truly hope I'm not breaking the rule about minimum tank size. I 100% plan on getting these fish into some kind of stock tank pond when I have the money and space to do so. But I have a lot of future plans that are not very set in stone so it's difficult to know when I've have the space for that. So until I have money for a bigger tank what's the minimum tank size I could temporarily keep three small goldfish in? And second question will they continue to grow larger or are they going to stay at around the size they are now since they are 8 and 5 years old? I truly want the best for these fish but the bigger the tank I need the longer it will be until they can get it since it will take me some time to save up the money I need.

Extra info I forgot to type in: the goldfish that had very extreme fin rot was moved to a ten gallon quarantine tank I was able to convince my mom to buy for me. So right now at least all three of them are not crowded in the 20 gallon. However both her and my dad are very against the idea of me buying a larger tank because they think "you shouldn't be spending so much on fish" so I'm all tapped out on help from them for sure. I've also been doing 30% water changes on the tanks about twice a week not sure if I should be doing more with how over stocked the they are.

How to get fish to eat gel food?

Posted: 01 Aug 2020 11:08 PM PDT

I'm trying to get my fish to eat mostly gel food cause I think it may be better for my goldfish (I have fancies) that seem to be becoming bloated also I've heard that more "natural" foods hurt the water quality less I'm still giving them pellets every other day to make sure they're getting any nutiriton my gel food may be lacking but they don't seem to want to eat it they'll eat literally anything like the mud slime algae etc in the pond but seem to not want the gel will the start eating it if I just give them time? They were a pain to get to eat pellets when I got them.

Help?! Just Had 4 Goldfish From A Carnival Given To Me?!

Posted: 01 Aug 2020 06:37 PM PDT

Hello!! My younger siblings very recently brought home 4 goldfish from the carnival. I already keep aquariums and bettas as a hobby and am fairly familiar with it but I have almost no knowledge whatsoever when it comes to goldfish. I will be taking them to a proper goldfish pond soon but I would appreciate some tips as to how to keep them alive for a short while until I can get them there. Any information would be extremely helpful right now, Thanks!!

goldfish gasping at bottom of tank?

Posted: 01 Aug 2020 05:05 PM PDT

hello! i just got three goldfish for the first time and i'm unsure of what to do. first i thought it was just a goldfish thing but i'm not sure anymore.

they're gasping it seems for sure, not TOO heavy like gill flukes but still gasping. gave them some prazi anyways.

they're at the bottom of the tank. they're new, so is it stress or lack of oxygen? they at and swim just fine but never leave the bottom of the tank

8 y/o fish coming home again! I've done my research, am I missing anything?

Posted: 01 Aug 2020 12:30 PM PDT

Background info: I got a common goldfish in 3rd grade and he lived in a 100 gallon horse trough for 6 years. He only ate bugs and whatever fell out of the horses' mouths! Rocket had a heater in the winter and endured extreme temperatures as well as water and temp shocks, but survived it all and fared well. After my family got rid of our last horse, he had to be transferred to a small 3-gallon tank due to my mother caring for him. She was unable to change out water from anything bigger than that.

Now, 2 more years later, it's finally my turn to care for Rocket. I got a 10-gallon tank for free (see edit below for details on why I have to work with this!) I also have some small fake plants, marbles as decorations, black gravel, a filtration system, tubing for a siphon for water changes, and a bubbler all for free.

Should I get a thermometer and a pH tester kit? He survived without either for 6 years on his own, but I want Rocket to live under optimal conditions. Additionally, I would like to provide a variety of food for him. What are some common brands that could work well for him?

Am I missing anything? I'm on a tight budget but I want Rocket to live happily and will do my best for him!

Edit 1: I have decided against snails because they cannot legally be sold where I live; they are invasive. Additionally they'll take up precious space in the tank.

Edit 2: I am aware a 10-gallon tank is too small, but due to many restrictions, including my mother's adamant disapproval, I can't go any bigger than that. I'm doing everything I can to improve his living situation and it frustrates me that I can't help more.

Odd behavior

Posted: 01 Aug 2020 01:32 PM PDT

I have two common goldfish, got both at the same time and they usually get along great. They usually swim together and occasionally chase each other around, nothing aggressive unless it's feeding time and they want the same bit of food lol. The one time they both got sick, I had to quarentine them both and they spent the whole time trying to swim to each other from their containers.

Recently, one of them had a bout of constipation that he's now recovered from, so I moved him from the hospital tank back into the main tank. When acclimating him in a smaller plastic bag, my other fish seemed to recognize him just fine, swam next to the bag and followed it if it floated off.

But when I let the recovered fish out, his buddy, pardon the expression, flipped his shit and swam around him like crazy. He spent the next two minutes or so bumping into him from underneath, swimming just a little bit off and coming around again. This only really happened for a few minutes until they split off, and there was no nipping or chasing.

It was kinda funny to watch at the time, but after looking it up I can't find anything that explains this behavior, just suggesting aggressive behavior which doesn't match what happened. Plus, it's not like they forgot each other, and they're acting perfectly normal now.

My friend's theory is since the sick one was having trouble swimming up, the other one was trying to make sure he could do it. While adorable, I doubt my fish are smart enough to do all that.

This turned into a very long-winded explanation but I was just wondering if anyone else had seen something similar?

Question about goldfish and snails?

Posted: 01 Aug 2020 01:26 PM PDT

Hi, so I didn't see anything while researching the wiki or other resources (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sorry) and I'm wondering if I can keep those tiny snails with goldfish? The one that breed like nuts and are everywhere- not the trumpet ones but the lil ones. I am aware the goldfish would eat them, and that's not a problem, however that's also what I'm worried about. Would eating one of those snails have the same effect as a rock and potentially kill my fish if I were to keep them together?

I do not currently own goldfish and won't for probably another year when I have the room for the size tank they require, but I was just wondering since I like to make a plan ahead and know all of what I'll need to be getting for them.
