| Advice and tips seting up my first axolotl tank Posted: 15 Aug 2020 10:22 AM PDT Anyone have any thoughts or pointers for my plan to half fill* a 75 gallon tank and have a axolotl maybe two white or albino ones . Substrate I was thinking organic soil that's been through a sieve so it's safe and super powdery about 5cm deep . Two fairly small pieces of wood that I will sand and attach some Xmas moss and Anubis, arranged with some stones making some caves in the center of the tank closer to the back though. For plants I'm going with lots of devils ivy growing out the water and giving lots of shade and some moneywort to do the same just flouting on the surface blocking light from the lower levels of the water column a amazon sword and maybe some Val along the back might get dug up but I think it's good if I let the plants all grow in and I will see how they go also some frog bit and duck weed for blocking more light I have horn wort and guppy grass to help suck up nutrients but only want to use if it will really benefit the tank Adding Indian almond leaves along the front of the tank and the rooted plants at the back to maximise the surface area for them to walk and dig. filter wise and/or a filter on the top of the tank with sponge and filter ceramic and/or I was thinking small air stone in a corner to move some water and get more water surface area my tap water is hard and axolotls seem to thrive in it *i know im wasting space by half filling but it's a older tank and I am slightly worried about it spilling everywhere like in movies but I also am a very anxious person so I'm pretty sure I am overreacting because I've never even had a tank leak let a lone break for no reason i would love advice on this because if I fill it to closer to the top I can hook up the filter that is built into the lid of the tank even at 3/4 I could add a water lily in place of a few pathos in the tank which I have done before and love the look of Sorry very long winded just wanted to give as much information as possible :) thanks for any help [link] [comments] | ||

| Hypothetical Healing Question for Graphic Novel :) Posted: 15 Aug 2020 06:55 AM PDT Hi people! I'm writing a story and was hoping I could get some thoughts on the plausibility of some Axolotl specific plot details. I'm not overly concerned with precise scientific realism as this is absolutely a fantasy story and I'm fine playing fast and loose with the "science" but wanted to try and be as realistic as I can. Essentially, there is a child with animal shape shifting powers, because of idk, magic. He just does. So as a human, he has a limb cut off, and then transforms into an axolotl, the limb grows back. When he turns back into a human, presto, the human arm is regenerated. It makes simple enough "magical logic" I think. My QUESTION though, is how resilient an axolotl would be to a gunshot wound. So, near the end of the story, a human character is shot, probably in the abdomen somewhere, and is on the verge of dying. I want to grant this human, on the verge of death from the gunshot wound, (the bullet probably went strait through) shapeshifting powers in order to save their life. So do you think an axolotl, shot though their important organs, by a (lol) very tiny bullet, would be able to recover? Thank you very much if you read this far and for considering my very silly but important hypothetical axolotl question. [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 15 Aug 2020 06:37 AM PDT I want to start feeding my Axols worms. What types of worms? Frozen or live? How do I keep worms alive if they are alive? My kid has survived 13 years I guess I could figure it out How many do I feed? 1,2,3 oh geez [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 14 Aug 2020 10:52 PM PDT Good day all! So, I'm in need of some advice. As much as I LOVE a good planted tank, I'm too broke to invest into some extravagantly well managed planted aquarium for my lotls and I feel bad to have a mostly bare tank with just sand and several clay pots as hides. In addition to the problem of feeling bad, the tank just doesn't look good with the rest of my apartment. It's out of place and doesn't fit the overall greenhouse feel of my living space. I've recieved several comments on how I could "do better" even though my lotls are happy and content. All this to say, I'm considering a black water tank as it would be more visually pleasing as well as fit my apartment better. I understand that the tannins in the leaf/wood cause the water to be more acidic however limestone raises the ph of both soil and water. In addition, I was planning on planting a few lilies in the tank and accent it with some dwarf papyrus and if I can find some dwarf hair grass or java ferns those would also be added for air and water quality. I will also be using a sponge filter as well as an air stone to properly aerate the water and keep some circulation without being super overbearing. Moral of the story is the tank will not be a stereotypical blackwater tank but a blackwater/planted/pond style aquarium with natural additives to keep ph and ammonia in check. I know it'll be a lot of work to keep up, but I would like to know other people's opinions and thoughts on the matter. [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 15 Aug 2020 04:17 AM PDT So I'm currently on a drive to college, and this will be my first time transporting an axolotl. I'm using a pretty wide bin for him which was a mistake itself because....well it's a pain in the ass to carry. Secondly. I put his hide in there to calm him down, and hes hiding in it which is good, but it's kinda sliding around. Should I take the hide out or let it stay for the remainder of the ride? Its abt a 6 hour drive, hes got holes in the bin. [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:06 AM PDT Hi all, I'm considering getting an axolotl and had some questions about cleaning the tank. 1st and foremost, I know you have to replace 1/3 to 1/2 of the water weekly. What I want to know is if at any point, you need to remove everything from the tank and do a bleach solution clean as I do with my Ball Python. Also, I can't seem to find any info about how often you're supposed to replace the substrate. My final question (Which isn't related to cleaning) is if your axolotl say doesn't eat a couple of live nightcrawlers, do you have to fish them out or can they be left in there? Thanks everyone!
