Please visit the wiki before posting Posted: 14 Jul 2020 06:52 AM PDT Many repeat questions can be answered by the wiki. It is solid advice. Nobody likes troubleshooting sick fish but we do it because we love goldfish. Chances are there is a problem with your water quality brought on by bad advice from the fish store; you are not changing enough water and your tank is too small. If everything was perfect well... you would still have problems because squeezing a carp sized fish into a cute little body is just problematic no matter how you slice it. "Raising goldfish is easy. Ammonia kills them. Nitrite kills them. Nitrate kills them. That's it." -Some Guy on the Internet [link] [comments]

I'm getting desperate here (swim bladder?) Posted: 14 Jul 2020 09:55 PM PDT I have a ranchu who's pretty much full sized. He's been the picture of health until about a month ago, when i found him head standing and thought he was dead. Since that point in time, he's been unable to leave the bottom few inches of the tank unless he gets caught in a current and then he just tumbles thru the water. When he's not exhausted from trying to swim, he eats well, and he harasses his girlfriend. I posted about this before and had a single reply insisting it was hemorrhagic septicemia but except for the swimming issues, he looks like the picture of health. No swelling, no word spots, no discoloration, no signs of itchiness. No one else is showing any signs of anything abnormal. I've fasted him. I've tried feeding him in laxative foods. I've tried an antibacterial. I've tried Epsom salt. I just ordered clove oil because at this point i can't imagine life is very good for him but i also (obviously) don't want to have to euthanize him. My water parameters are Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 5 pH 8.2 Temp 70 I have two big canister filters running plus two sponge filters. I do a 40 to 50% water change every 4 days. The tank is a bit overstocked but in a week or so, my two largest goldies are moving to another tank. [link] [comments]
Cloudy Water in Established Tank Posted: 14 Jul 2020 09:39 PM PDT I've got 3 fancy goldfish in 100G. In the past week the water has turned cloudy, even persisting through a water change. This tank is not new (been up and running with the goldfish for over a year) so I don't think it's a bacterial bloom like you see in new tanks. I've tested the water and nothing is wrong on that side of things luckily. There's been no changes to anything in the tank. No new items or anything which would possibly cause discolouration. The tank has more than adequate filtration through a large canister filter. It has an air stone to provide enough air for them and the tank is under stocked so these things, combined with the water being tested and showing no issues, I can't work out what it could be. Does anyone have any experience or ideas for what it might be and how to resolve it? The fish themselves are doing fine at this moment and don't appear to be acting unusual. [link] [comments]

Can someone explain to me we goldfish are considered "dirty fish"? Posted: 14 Jul 2020 02:24 PM PDT I commonly see on reddit and other forums that people refer to goldfish as "very dirty or messy" fish that produce a lot of ammonia and therefore require a a quite large tank. Can someone explain to me why this is the case? The way I see it, the only variable that effects how dirty a tank is is the amount of food that you provide for them. So are most people feeding their goldfish more then they would tropical fish? It seems to me that a goldfish which is willing to eat from top water, the middle, and root around in the gravel would actually be cleaner than many other types of fish which don't do this. (Obviously the fact that goldfish grow quite large means that they need a large tank, but more often then not I hear people say they need larger tanks for being "dirty" rather than that they are large fish.) So can someone explain to me if there is something I overlooked that makes goldfish more messy or produce more ammonia then other fish types? [link] [comments]
