Goldfish - Aquariums - Last week was my goldfish, Goldie's 6th Birthday / Gotcha Day! (6/28) This is him with a gift I made for him out of resin and polymer clay. However, he is almost always excited, so it's very had to take a non-blurry picture of him. c:

Help identifying goldfish?

I'm new to goldfish and I got this little guy the other day. He was sold to me (from a pet store) as an Oranda goldfish. I was having doubts/am still having doubts but got him anyway because I still thought he was very cute. The employee that was helping me said she thought he was about 6 months old if that's any help. What does he look like to you?

I'm a little confused...

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 04:03 PM PDT

I recently read several articles that say the oldest healthiest goldfish kept in captivity were kept in 10 gallons or even less, and though they were stunted their organs were fine. They were all "normal" (i.e. not fancy) goldfish. Apparently the reason they did so well was conservative feeding, and high attention to water parameters. Also, these keepers seemed to lavish alot of attention on their goldies. I'm assuming this provided enrichment. I have to admit, I'd LOVE to live in a grand home of 5,000 sq. Feet. Indeed, I grew up in a rural home, at least that large, and with 2 acres of yard to boot. But all I can afford is a 350 sq. Foot studio, now. And yet, I'm very happy. These goldfish lived for 20 to 40 years. How could they miss what they didn't know? The owners seemed to think they were happy. I am in no way trying to advocate underhousing goldfish. I just want input from people who know what's what.

Filter accident many scales missing! Info needed please!

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:03 PM PDT

I purchased a baby Ranchu today, placing him in his quarantine tank that filter gaurd fell off and he got sucked in. Despite this massive trauma he seems in good spirits. He is missing a large amount of scales. Will this cause him to die? Also is there anything I can do to assist him in surviving?

Life expectancy

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:26 AM PDT

Purchased my first three fantails 6 months ago, after being very hesitant about goldfish I enjoy them a lot.

They are kept in 75 a gallon, non-heated, with 15 zebra danios.

What has been your experience with life expectancy for these types of goldfish and others? Any crazy old ones out there that you have had?

Another beginner question..

Hi all,

Thanks to the advice on this group a few days ago I've now got sorted with a 105l tank for the two goldfish my daughter acquired 'free' from her school. I know it's still not perfect but they now have nearly 10x the space they were in.

My next question is this...

I got a Tetra Starterline kit that came with the tank, filter, light, heater etc. At this point I haven't installed the heater but the rest of the kit is all set up. However, the filter seems very noisy, humming away quite loudly all the time. Since I've already thrown some cash at this project I'm not against the idea of getting a quieter filter (almost silent). I quite like the idea of a hang on back filter but how does that work if I have the aquarium lid in place?

Do I need to leave the lid off? Is there a better internal option?

I'm pretty clueless here so once again advice is appreciated so long as it's nice and quiet and does the job.

Thanks!
