My 10 year old goldfish died and I feel sad

Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:53 AM PDT

This is so weird, but I felt like talking to folks in this community might be helpful. I had two tank mates for the last ten years. One was a fancy goldfish and the other is a feeder. My fancy passed away and I am pretty torn up about it. Anyone else have actual sad feelings when their fish die? Or am I just overly sensitive? 😩😩😩

Fish less cycle questions.

Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:27 AM PDT

I have read the Wiki many times, just need some further help.

Just started a fish less cycle on a 450L tank using flakes yesterday. Currently I have- Amonia-0.25ppm Nitrite-0.5ppm Nitrate-5ppm I've put a cartridge from the filter from the tank the fish are currently in in the new canister filter. I also have another Jewul filter in the new tank which had a "booster". Do i continue to add flakes to get the ammonia up to 3ppm or do I wait for the ammonia and nitrite to drop to 0?

How to up my KH & GH?

Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:55 PM PDT

Hi folks, me again (:

So in preparation for getting my tank next week, I grabbed the API master test kit and the Fluval KH/GH test so I could figure out a baseline for my tap water:

  • Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate = 0
  • PH = 7.6
  • GH = 60 ppm
  • KH = 70 ppm

I can't find any consistent info on what goldies need for KH and GH, but most of the numbers I'm seeing are much higher than what I'm working with (though PH seems to be nicely in the middle of their acceptable range).

Any suggestions how I up it? If possible, I'd rather not have to add chemicals to the tank every water change. I've read that you can add crushed coral to the tank but the suggestion is 1lb per 10 gallons (so 4.5lbs for my planned tank). Is crushed coral OK to add to the substrate for goldies? Or will they try to eat it? If so, any other suggestions as to how I can add it? (If I do need to add something at every water change, I will - but the coral route is definitely more appealing)

Also, I've read KH, GH and PH work hand in hand - adjust one and you'll adjust another - but I think my PH can stand to increase a bit anyway so I'm not too concerned about that.

Thanks in advance!

New goldfish owner in search of advice

Posted: 30 Jul 2020 06:58 PM PDT

Hi, I'm not a first time fish owner, but I am a first time goldfish owner. I'm looking to start a 40 or 55 gallon aquarium and I plan to get 2 fancy goldfish (maybe 3 for the 55 gallon). I need all of the advice I can get. I've been researching and trying to take in everything I can to properly care for goldfish. I have a few specific questions and then I would love to hear any other advice that would have helped you as a beginner.

  1. I've seen a lot of recommendations for the aquaclear HOB filters. What filter media should I use for them and what size/ power do I get? Or do you recommend a different filter?

  2. Please explain to me the basic idea of aeration and what to buy to aerate my tank.

  3. What chemicals would you recommend to cycle the tank? I have Prime and all of the test kits. Is quick start good, or should I go for something else?

  4. I'm on the fence as to whether I should get a lid for the tank. The community seems to have mixed feelings so please share your thoughts.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I really appreciate the help :)

Should I add another fish?

Posted: 30 Jul 2020 06:28 PM PDT

TD;DR: what smaller fish can go with my goldfish

I have an 100L tank, which currently houses 2 very small goldfish. I want to get another fish for the tank but I have heard goldfish get very big so I am weary to add a third goldfish as I do not want to have to upgrade from this 100L tank for a very long time.

My question is, are there any fish that do not grow to a large size that would be suitable to go with my goldfish? Are there any goldfish breeds that stay small? Do you think it's ok to add another goldfish.

Does anyone have any experience with tetras and goldfish?

(Black moor and fantail) Thanks

Need help

Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:28 PM PDT

I just got my first goldfish today, I have a 25 litre tank and 2 small goldfish. It has a filter and some plants and some decorations. My goldfish sometimes go to the top of the tank for like air and then go back down to the bottom, they started doing this after a couple hours after they were put in. Is this normal?

Fin Rot, White Film Over Eyes, Has Started Swimming Sideways & Upside Down

Posted: 30 Jul 2020 10:26 AM PDT

Edit 2: link to some images: http://imgur.com/a/dX5cVw7

Edit: Here are the values my family got from testing the water:

GH: 180 KH: 200 pH: 7.5 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 0

Apparently we only tested for chlorine and ammonia at the pet store and I don't have the values written down but the fish tech told me clearly that our ammonia and chlorine levels were fine and that my fish was just sick.

My family has had a common goldfish that we won at the fair for about 6 years now (I know, unethical, but we love him and try to take good care of him.) He was previously in a much smaller tank because that was what was recommended to us when we got him, but we recently (a few days ago) transitioned him to a new 10 gallon tank with a filter.

About two days after we moved him to his new tank, we noticed that he wasn't very active. Swimming in place often and staying close to the sides of the tank. Then we noticed that his fins looked frayed, which I'm positive now is fin rot. His eyes also look white, almost like there's some kind of film over them, which I thought was cloudy eye but might actually be something else? Anyways, he hasn't been eating like he used to (I'm assuming because he can't see and the food sits at the top of the tank?) and today I noticed that he was very clearly swimming upside down and sideways.

I know poor water quality is very often the cause of this but we've used water from the same source as his last tank, just added water treatment and a filter, and we tested pH, nitrate, nitrite, carbonate, general hardness, ammonium, and chlorine levels both by ourselves using test strips and we took a water sample to Petco (where we got the tank) to have them test the water. Both our results and the feedback from the pet store said that our water levels were fine. I can post our results if needed but it doesn't seem like water quality is the problem.

He's in his own tank so overcrowding wouldn't be an issue and we haven't introduced any new fish into the tank. We have dosed him with Melafix for the last two days and will continue to do so through the rest of the week but I'm very worried because he seems to be getting worse.

We don't have any veteranarians who treat fish in our area -- the closest would probably be an hour-long drive and I doubt he would survive the trip.

Apologies if this was too confusing to follow or not informative enough but any advice is appreciated. I can also take pictures if that helps.

Cloudy grey fuzz won't come off drift wood, months after tank has been established (more info in comments)

Is there a goldfish that would survive in a mostly dark room with very little sun. Can artificial light provide for it?

Thank you.

Has anyone ever dealt with recurring swim bladder disorder ?

Posted: 30 Jul 2020 06:30 AM PDT

Two weeks ago I made a post about my oranda having SBD, and it hasn't got any better since then. He's had the symptoms for almost four weeks and I seriously don't know what to do anymore. I tried fasting, feeding peas, reducing the amount of food I gave him, salt baths - but it just won't go away. For a couple of days he got better in his quarantine tank but then it came back immediately. Other than that, he's still very much hungry and reactive, and he can manage to swim correctly for short periods of time.

I really don't wan't to have to euthanize my goldfish. Has anyone ever dealt with SBD that doesn't go away?
