Can’t have my own fish, so I stitched some instead !

Just got this handsome boi today and was wondering why he was being slightly aggressive to the other fish, then I realised the cute freckles on his cheeks could be breeding stars. Am I correct in thinking that they are breeding stars?

Fancy goldfish in pond

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 10:50 PM PDT

I was wondering if I should bring in my fancy goldfish for the winter this year as we only did comets for our pond before and added fancies this year.

I sorta got out of fish keeping so I'd have to restart my tank again if I wanted to bring then in. The ones I have in the pond are 1 oranda 1 telescope and 1 fantail originally 3 fantails but I haven't seen the other two in a bit.

For anyone familiar with the Iowa Illinois Wisconsin tri-state area you'll know it gets freezing so I've usually just had a heater in my pond as a safeguard for my fish but I don't know if it'd be safe for fancies to stay out there.

Thank you to anyone that responds

(Edit only the fancies would be coming in the comets would be staying outside)

Filter wont fit?

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 06:02 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

I'm upgrading my tank from 55G to 125G and I also got a canister filter to support the size of the tank. Everything is set up and ready to put my fish back in but I have one problem....

The old filter that has all the good bacteria inside it won't fit on the edge of the new tank. I have a aqua clear 70g HOB that I was using on my 55G but the new tank has thicker black plastic at the top making the intake tube be pushed away and not able to suck up water. I'm kinda at a loss about what to do because I need that good bacteria that's built up inside the filter.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Question about fish identification?

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 12:48 PM PDT

We have a goldfish pond and earlier this year there was an accident that resulted in losing all our fish, we were obviously very devastated especially because we've had some of them for 15+ years. My mom was going to stop keeping them as a result of it, but a couple weeks ago we discovered we have tons of babies that either hatched afterwards or managed to survive. We're having trouble because they are still pretty small figuring out how to tell them apart? It's pretty clear which ones are plain comets especially as they start to turn orange but we also had koi and shubunkin and I didn't know if anyone has tips on how to tell them apart at this stage? We won't be able to keep them all ourselves but we'd like to start figuring out which is which so we can plan ahead on what we need to do?

We know that comets and koi can have hybrid babies and they just stay mostly black? But can koi and shubunkin interbreed and do those look the same or do they look like a mixture??

Any advice would be appreciated!!

Tank question/did I put the wrong goldfish combo together

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 01:54 PM PDT

So I just got goldfish a few weeks ago, two baby goldfish, one black moor and one Shubunkin.

I thought Shubunkins were fancy goldfish like the black moor (I did quite a bit of research on a lot of things but somehow screwed that up). They're both eating and getting along really well. I cycled the tank before putting them in and the nitrate level has been great (been testing about every other day). I'm wondering if I need to buy a new tank or if the 29 gallon I have right now is fine for the next few months or so. Also wondering whether it's okay to keep the two together in general? I may be overthinking this but would really appreciate any help!
