Keeping Cool

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:23 AM PDT

I got Ozzy about a week ago and he looks great. He is in a quarantine tank by himself right now. I have noticed he does this pretty often. He otherwise swims, poops and eats well. Should I be concerned or is he bored?

Complete Newbie

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 04:13 AM PDT

Hi all,

As the title suggests I'm a complete novice at keeping goldfish but here's the backstory...

A few months ago we 'acquired' two goldfish from my daughters school as they needed a new home. She was desperate to have them so we agreed and they've been with us ever since in the plastic tank along with fake plant and stone feature thing they came with. I have always been an animal lover and was shocked to find out a couple of days ago that they need a much bigger space (current tank is about 30cm x 20cm x 25cm)!

I'm already beating myself up over this so please don't join in the daddy bashing. I'm about to order a Tetra Starterline 54l tank with filter etc. from amazon (60 x 30 x 30) along with some nice lava rocks. I also intend to get some live plants ( low maintenance ones) but before I throw over £100 at it I wanted you knowledgeable lot to check that what I'm getting is suitable.

The goldfish are currently about 10 and 8cm long but I know they'll grow. Is the tank I'm getting ok? Could I, if the mood took me, add more to the tank and if so how many?

Any and all advice appreciate as I'm not a fool but I'm seriously lacking in knowledge about coldwater fish keeping.

Thanks!

Just bought a 29 gallon Topfin kit, for half price! Depending on what my local stores have I’ll either get a Ranchu, Ryukin, or Oranda, with a couple live plants as well.

Brown Algae (diatoms) :(

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 11:25 AM PDT

Does anyone else here have problems with brown algae? Its popping up all over my tank. Its really bad on the leaves of my plants but is also growing on the walls of the tank, my driftwood, and my large rock. Its really ugly and I'd like to get rid of it. I have one large goldfish in a 30 gallon tank.

The internet points to silicates as the main cause or that its normal during the cycling of a tank. However, even though its relatively new my tank is already established and has Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate levels of 0 across the board. I think my plants really help keep the Nitrate down but I still do weekly water changes. I even bought an expensive test kit to test silicate levels but the levels in the tank and my tap water are both low (less than 2 mg/L).

The only other think I can think of is my light. I bought a bright NICREW LED overhead light and its usually on for like 14+ hours a day.

Any advice would be really appreciated! Thank you.

What is wrong with my goldfish? My fish doesn’t move much from that same bottom corner of the tank and is always staying there without moving much. If it did move, the fish usually dive right into the corner again and stays there doing nothing again.
