How difficult is sand to clean?

Posted: 09 Jul 2020 01:55 PM PDT

I've seen some lovely tanks with sand, and I understand that sand is better than gravel for goldfish tanks. At the moment, I have gravel and a gravel vacuum that works well. But when I upgrade my tank, I'm considering my options for substrate.

For regular cleanings, how difficult is it to clean the sand?

I didn't think I'd like the black and native colour goldies but they really make the rest of them pop with orange and white.

Help! It all startet with a nitrite peak because my mom overfed. I thought the red spots were ammonia burns, I kept the water pristine, test daily, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 20. He is lethargic and only swims around once in a while.

A few months ago my goldfish had a small red top lip and I thought it was just bumped against something but now it’s massive and it looks like it’s eating away at its mouth. Please help :)

Which one would be better for 2 fancies? 40 gallon one on top that has a deeper depth or the 50 gallon that’s skinner but longer?

R.I.P. Holland and Post Disposing of Tank

Posted: 09 Jul 2020 03:19 PM PDT

Hello, a few weeks or month ago I made a post on here saying my Goldfish had a Tumor on her side. She was an orange fantail. Well she died and she was the only living thing left in my tank. I have a plant but I plan on throwing away the tank and just not getting fish again. My life is too busy for fish and I need to move on. They deserve love and attention and I can't give them all my attention unfortunately. How do I dispose of the dirty water my fish died in and get rid of the tank?

Thanks.

Power outage

Posted: 09 Jul 2020 08:56 AM PDT

I have two young oranda in a 30 gallon tank and we have a power outage for around 4hours (so they say). I have no generator so is there anything I could be doing to make this easier on them? I've never been through this before and I don't want them stressed. I was actually checking parameters before the power went out and everything is fine.

Sick Goldfish?

Posted: 09 Jul 2020 10:55 AM PDT

Hi All,

Something's wrong all a sudden with my goldfish and I though I'd ask you guys for your help!

He was fine yesterday. Swimming well, eating, scavaging the bottom for food.

But today, he is constantly opening and closing his mouth, swimming around the tank slow, and does not eat. If he does get food in his mouth, he spits it out.

Water is all fine. I even did a 100% change out this morning.

I suspect he's sick with possibly swim bladder, but he seems to be swimming correctly, just slowly. I read to stop feeding him for a couple days to see what happens. I did drop in some cooked peas, which he loves but so far has not even bothered getting near :(

Any ideas as to what it could be?

pond fish possibly “blowing bubbles” for reasons other than aeration?

Posted: 09 Jul 2020 03:23 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice. I have a ~200gal garden with three 3.5inch comets. (I will likely upgrade when they are bigger.) I do weekly maintenance involving 20-50% water changes using Seachem Prime as my conditioner & I use a test kit to monitor the water quality. I also have two air stones, a fountain, and a waterfall to keep the pond oxygenated during the summer. I also have a UV clarifier pump to keep my algae under control in the summer, too.

My concern is that one of my goldfish that looks otherwise healthy tends to "blow bubbles" in one of the two shallow areas of the pond for a few seconds before returning to schooling with the other fish. Interestingly enough, this is also the same place where I feed them every day. I don't really want to assume that they are just "begging for food" in case something else is wrong.

Is it possible that I'm over-aerating the pond? Is this a sign of something else that I haven't thought of? Any feedback would be appreciated!! :)
