U/full-fathom-five’s post inspired me to make my own crochet betta fish with some modifications to better reflect my murder fish’s.....charming personality. Banana for scale.

Hello,

I got hired on at a daycare in the beginning of the Pandemic that immediately had to close it's doors until further notice. Well, we have returned to work a month ago and have been preparing and cleaning the building to get ready for the kiddos return. Yesterday morning I went into the preschool classroom that no one had been working in and to my horror discovered a forgotten about Betta. His tank hadn't been cleaned since February and he hadn't been fed since March. But he was alive. Barely. I wish I took pictures of the tank before cleaning it, but it was so bad that I wasted no time. So much algae, you couldn't see through it. The filters were green. The fish was weak and folded on a rock feature. I knew it would be a shock for him, but I didn't have another option, so I scooped him into a cup while I got to work on cleaning his tank. He's at my house now and I really want him to pull through. He has been folded up in a top corner by the pump since I brought him home yesterday afternoon. I replaced some of the plastic features with silk ones because he would get all tangled in them and his fins looked kind of shredded. I replaced the filter. I put a heater in the tank that automatically sets it at 78. I did the appropriate water/beta conditioner measurement and placed his cup in the freshly cleaned tank for 40 minutes before introducing him. He has eaten a few pellets since I discovered him, but not voraciously. He has improved slightly from yesterday. How long will it take for him to return to full health? Any advice for giving him the best chance? He's in one of those 3.5 gallon Topfin tanks with a pump. Should I replace the silk plants with his old ones even though he gets all twisted in them? Thank you kind strangers!

Update He is continually improving. Has eaten more and started exploring a little bit. He still seems to tire out quickly though.
