Help with cloudy water!

Posted: 16 Jul 2020 07:25 AM PDT

Please help! My water is perpetually cloudy and I don't know what to do next.

I've had my two axolotls (4 years old each) in a 25 gallon tank with a decent filter (strong enough for up to a 40 gallon tank). The substrate is riverstones. For the last few weeks the water has been getting murky and cloudy white, with a yucky film on top. I've tried letting it cycle through but it got even grosser after a week. It's never been like that!

I started partial water changes with no success and finally cleaned the entire tank the other night, scrubbing the rocks and inside and filter. Two days later I see it getting cloudy again.

I feed my axolotls once every 3-4 days.... so I don't think it's too much poop? What can I do to stop the cloudiness? Any safe products I can use?

Wild type or melanoid?

Posted: 15 Jul 2020 10:41 PM PDT

I am picking up our new axolotl tomorrow but I've only had leucistic and they are probably my favorite so far and hopefully I will get one of them again as well but I have my choice between melanoid and a wild type, any one have any suggestions or tips on what to look for? Or any experiences with mixing types or breeding different types?? Or should I get one of each or maybe 2 of wild or melanoid or just one and get a leucistic down the road? Just trying to get advice from more experienced axolotl keepers:) I had never even heard of a melanoid before and think a solid black one with a pink one would be reallllllly cool but I doubt they have a solid black anyway! Or will they go black as they age. Looking at different pictures just seems to be confusing me here! lol thank you!

Young axolotl and sand

Posted: 15 Jul 2020 10:34 PM PDT

Okay so I just got my axolotl he's a melanoid and obviously super dark. I've been looking into ways to see him a bit better (since the tank is dark and so is he) without adding a light because I know they don't like lights.

Right now I have a bare bottom tank and after a bunch of research I found that super fine sand should be fine for them since its smaller it's harder to cause impactation. I'm wondering how sand will effect him since he's 4 months old. I was thinking of using sand as a way to give him some grip on the bottom, lighten up the tank a bit so I can see him easier, and make the tank over all look better. But none of that is worth his health. Is it okay to use sand and if so what sand do you recommend I'm looking for a really light sand

If it's not okay for him what would you recommend to lighten up the tank a bit without using lights so I can see him better.

Thanks in advance for the help
