Unwanted Snail Babies

Posted: 22 Jul 2020 08:23 PM PDT

Hello,

A few months ago I got a 55 gallon tank for a birthday present. I added handful of fish and two mystery snails to get myself started and while I've had a few ups and downs with my water condiitons, my snails have held on strong.

When I was looking at the tank this morning I found a approximately six to seven new baby snails crawling around. I was surprised and didnt think much of it until I looked around and saw a bunch of small black egg looking things throughout the rocks through the entire bottom. Unsure of whether these were eggs or just aquarium filth, I cleaned out the rocks and did a water change.

A few hours later I looked at the snail and noticed it was definetly laying little black eggs on the side of the aquarium. I did some google searches and found that snails can continue to reproduce each month in the right conditions, and not to sound like a jerk but I dont want to continuously get new snails and have them overrun my tank. Is there anything I can do to stop them from reproducing?

I just want to have a healthy tank with a mix of fish, the snails were to just help keep things clean and now Im regretting ever getting them.

Any insight would be great!

  • Will this be a forever thing or do mystery snails do this until they die?
  • Should I just get a seperate small tank (few gallons) just for snails to keep them out of my large tank?

Nerites hatching in freshwater?

Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:25 PM PDT

A month ago I bought 10 olive nerites to clear up green-spot algae buildup in my tank. I made sure to count while placing them into my tank, and i also counted to make sure i got the number of nerites i bought.

2 weeks ago one of my larger female nerites died from being on the lower end of the heater in my tank; rip Sam. This should leave me with 9 nerites... But when counted up, there appears to be 12.

https://imgur.com/a/PgPjzcI (nsfw? they're riding eachother)

I've never actively looked for baby nerites because i assumed it wouldn't happen, but i don't know how i would've magically gained 3 nerites. Looking into breeding and raising nerites, it seems pretty unlikely to have occurred naturally in my tank, as my tank is not brackish at all.

Only thing out of the ordinary is that I've been giving them snello since they basically cleared all the algae in my tank and I'm scared they'll starve.

There was also a bit of fungus on my driftwood and I did place around 5 freshwater salt crystals on it, but that should be nothing in a 40gal tank.

3 of the nerites are smaller than the larger ones, and lack chips/damaged shells like those that I bought (B grade), but I also don't really remember the size and details of the smallest snail I got.

I also don't know what nerites look like at a young stage; so maybe im confusing them with bladders or mts. But from my understanding the likeliness of nerites hatching and surviving to adulthood is next to impossible.

Any theories welcome, i'm just confused.
