Goldfish - Aquariums - I don’t think I’ve ever posted a profile still of Pyke that show how large and in charge he is. Look at that CHONK.

Carnivals Should Stop Giving Away Goldfish

Posted: 31 May 2020 02:22 PM PDT

I won my beloved goldfish, June, at a carnival two years ago. She is very dear to me, but I am starting to accept that I do not have the means to take care of her. Giving away goldfish at carnivals is extremely cruel - to both the fish and the winners. Most people do not have the means to create a 20 gallon environment for a fish they won at a carnival and it ends in two ways. They either are disappointed when they have to rehome the fish or they force the fish into a smaller, dirty tank which will stunt the fish's growth. Stop using these fish just so more people will play your ring on bottle game. It's not worth it. If you won a goldfish at a carnival - I am in no way trying to make you feel bad. Only the people who capitalize off the poor fishies :)

Tom Hanks & Big Floyd

So it's been about a month since my fish piggy lost a scale. I'm wondering when it should grow back and if there's anything I can do to help keep the flesh healthy while exposed.

Irritating fish

Posted: 31 May 2020 06:01 PM PDT

Guys help. Everyone I know at home has tropical fish and tbh, they're stumped.

I was all set for getting rid of my goldfish tank. I had come to the conclusion it was too much work for the type of job I'm in. The last thing I can be assed with after a 24hr shift is water changes.

However in the light of this pandemic someone wanted rid of their goldies and basically threatened to flush them if no one took them.

So I took them and omg they must have had quite possibly, the most irritating damn fish I've ever had in my life. It was cute to start with but I'm near flushing him myself. (Joke)

He does this thing that if I'm near the tank he smacks at the surface of the water. At first I thought it was gasping for air but checked my parameters and they're all healthy. None of the other fish are gasping. He's now doing it every night constantly whether the light is on or off, I feed them (raised on and fed sinking pellets) in the morning to make sure it's not confusing their routine. I've come to the conclusion that it's learnt attention seeking behaviour. However, whilst I write this out at 2 AM as I'm desperate for sleep before yet again another 24hr shift in the morning that this fish is keeping me up from getting rest for. How the hell do I teach a fish to stfu at bed time? Help me.

Despite not really having the same energy for fish, I force myself to because it's not their fault. They just thank me by keeping me up all night :-)

please help tiny goldfish is sick :(

Posted: 31 May 2020 08:49 PM PDT

a year ago, my friend asked if anyone wanted to goldfish, as she no longer wanted them and was wondering if anyone would be able to rehome them. i told her i would, and a year later the three goldies are still kicking. im not sure the size of the tank, i'm pretty sure it's a 20 gallon which i know is way too small but i don't have the room to upgrade. she gave me everything, i bought them a light and stuff and tried my best. they are all different sizes, one is very tiny, one is medium sized, and one is pretty big. they are common goldfish i'm pretty sure, like the feeder ones from petco. everything has been good so far, sometimes the little one has given me some scares but she always turns out fine. however today i think is her last day. she has been hanging out on the bottom of the tank all day, her mouth is open and her gills seem clamped shut. she is still alive, and sometimes swims around but always goes back to the bottom. there is a circular red spot on her head, and her eye is bulging. i did a water change and everything i can at the moment but i cant go to petco or any fish stores because coronavirus is rampant in my area and everything is closed. i am really hoping the red spot isn't an ulcer. she hasn't eaten anything, and i've seen the big goldfish bite her twice. even though it would still be terrible i am hoping the red spot is a bite and not an ulcer. i am at my wits end and i am scared to go to bed because i don't want to wake up to her being dead. i joined this sub for some advice, i don't have any water testing kits because my friend didn't have any and i assumed they weren't necessary, which i'm now regretting because if i order one now it won't come for a few days and i don't think she has that much time. i am devastated and i am hoping she makes it though the night but it's hard to see her like this, i know she is suffering. do any of you know what could be wrong with her? these fish have been together for 2 years. thank you and sorry this post is long :(

Starting a pond

Posted: 31 May 2020 03:58 PM PDT

Hello! I have a small pond in my backyard and I was wondering how i should go about this whole thing. I have two comet goldfish that I got without proper knowledge of their care and they've been with me for about 4-5 months. I wanted to give them to a better home but sadly nobody would take them, or they'd be living in even worse conditions. I have been doing frequent water changes to make sure their water is clear and safe for them, and I'm trying my best to care for them. My brother somehow convinced me to use them as fish to jump-start the cycling of a then-new tank of mine in hopes they would die swiftly after. It was awful, I know. I regret it every day.

So, with the help of my mom I want to turn our old pond into a fish pond to hopefully help my little guys have a better life. Their names are Sku and Norman and they're lovely little fish! I live in a place where the high in the summer is about 95, and the low in the winter could be -15.

Background: a ~55 gallon pond that previously had chlorine in it. There's only a pump right now, but my father and I are creating a filter for the pond that will connect to the pump. I have large Aqueon filter cartridges, and I'm hoping to get some sponge material and bio beads to help with the filtration.

What plants would be best for this pond? How should I care for them over the winter? Will the chlorine somehow leech back into the water from the pump/liner? Is the homemade filter a good idea?

Thank you for any and all comments/advice!! I really need all the help I can get!

Goldfish has suddenly started floating over the last ~4 hours and cannot stay away from water surface.

Posted: 31 May 2020 08:12 PM PDT

She's unable to move down away from the water's surface but keeps trying to, she ends up flipping onto her sides occasionally & once on her back on the way back up, but once she's there she's typically the right way up. I was due for a 70% water change today but got stuck working on other chores throughout the day so I couldn't get to it. Ballpark estimate of the water params are 0-0-80 (I know this is WAY too high, which is why I wanted to mention I intended to do a water change today) on NH3, NO2, NO3. I think this might be constipation from poor feeding habits and was wondering if I could get some help with understanding how to do it effectively. I use repashy gold as the staple & feed her twice a day. I typically feed her by holding the food close to the surface so she can find it but she ends up gulping a bunch of air before she does. How should I be feeding her this food and how often? Should I turn off my filtration so she doesn't get moved around tonight? How long should I fast her before trying to feed her some peas? Should I add some Stress Coat+ to the aquarium to try to calm her down? For the future, should I just be dropping the food in chunks so they can find it on their own?

What's better for goldfish, tank size or footprint?

Posted: 31 May 2020 04:24 PM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade for my 2 goldfish I got recently and I'm wondering what would be the best fit for them. They're currently two small singletails I got about a month and a half ago. I didn't know what I was doing and they're in a 20 gallon, but I'm doing my best to be observant of them and their water quality.
