A pleasant surprise at PetSmart

Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:47 PM PDT

I went to PetSmart today because i wanted to get a couple fish for my second community tank.

While i was there, another customer asked a guy working fish how many goldfish she could put in a 55 gallon. He actually gave a reasonable answer of "maybe 4" and then went on to explain that goldfish are cold water fish, they they should only be kept with other goldfish. He also explained that they are poop machines and need a lot of filtration.

I hardly ever see people working fish who actually know anything about the goldies, so this was so refreshing to hear.

I know, we can argue that a 55g isn't enough tank for commons, but would work for fancies.

Still, nice to know at least one person there is looking out for the goldies!

And if you're curious, i brought home a dwarf gourami and 6 black skirt tetras.

Mochi seems to be doing this more than usual? There is lots of oxygenation and surface agitation, is he just skimming the water for leftovers?

Keeping goldfish in an outdoor pond?

Posted: 27 Jun 2020 04:37 PM PDT

So my son "won" 3 small goldfish (common types I think) at a carnival and without knowing all I now know about goldfish I got them a 5 gallon tank.

They actually seem sorta happy but after having done my research, I want them to have a "better" life and unfortunately my little apartment won't make do with a large tank.

Luckily grandma has a 60+ gallon outdoor pond. It used to house koi when grandpa was alive but has not been used since he passed. I def need to get a new filter but what else do I need to know about keeping them in an outdoor pond?

Thanks!

I'm going to be moving in the next couple days and wanted to know if anyone has any advice on how to make this easier and less stressful on Remy here. We want to also change his substrate for sand, but aren't sure if we do that during the move or wait a bit.

Black Lining on Fantail Goldfish Tail?

Black Lining on Fantail Goldfish Tail?

First time poster here, and first-time fishkeeper! I'm hoping to get some advice.

Important info:

-I've had the tank for 3 weeks, this fish for 2 weeks. Been working on getting the nitrogen cycle going, but both nitrates and nitrites have been pretty much at 0 this whole time (I have been adding the bacteria starter by API though)

-This lining appeared 4 days ago

-I've replaced the water twice in the past 4 days, the first time (4 days ago) I did about 25% and the second time I did a little over 50% (yesterday)

-This is a 29gal tank

-Yesterday, before I did the second water change, nitrites were at .5 ppm (the most it has ever been)

-I do have some live plants in the tank (not sure if this is important-but it's duckweed, and Java Fern). The other plants are all silk

I'm not sure if this is ammonia burn, but I'm very scared--I originally had 2 fish in there (this guy and a ryukin) but the ryukin started to show symptoms just like this one at first. I changed the water, no nitrites, but as the days went on, he started growing more black spots across his body, and he eventually died. I don't know what affliction my ryukin had, but it started just like this too, and changing the water didn't help.

(I hope this post looks okay I really don't know what I'm doing so let's hope pic works! I would upload multiple, but idk how)

(the cloudy eye is just the pic quality; in person it's clear!)
