Walter hunting down some pellets

I noticed his gills changed to this in under 48 hours, so I tubbed him and am in the process of cleaning out the tank. His tank also turned kinda cloudy in that time and I noticed weird while opaque bits floating around too, algae maybe?

Unexpected Axolotl

Hi. I'm in a bit of a situation, looking for some tips.

I think axolotls are super neat, but never planned on getting one. However, the world had different plans for me and I found myself in posession of one. My friend's new girlfriend bought one today and brought it home, but her mom didn't realize she was getting it and won't let her keep it. She passed it off to her boyfriend, but his apartment doesn't allow pets, and he's afraid of breaking his lease, so he has passed it off to me since I have some aquarium experience and am allowed pets at my apartment.

Although I have aquarium experience, I do not have axolotl experience and am looking for some help.

Along with the animal, she bought a 10 gallon tank and a filter good for 30+ gallons. Is this ok to use? Should I use something different? I'm afraid of the filter being too strong. How do I treat the water? I assume they have sensitive skin like other salamanders/amphibians, what's the best way to go about this? Are pellets good enough to feed them, or do they require a more specific diet? Anything else I should know?

Tips and tricks as well as links to good sites would be helpful, thanks in advance!

Edit: just read the pinned post and I guess I'll be buying a new tank and the correct food tonight.

rescue axolotl

Posted: 24 Jun 2020 03:11 PM PDT

so i just got a rescue axolotl who came from an owner who never cleaned the tank and never fed him. i just got him today and got him into a new tank with a rock to hide under if needed, as well as a thin layer of sand across the bottom, he's currently sticking to two corners that he switches between. im wondering if it's just the stress of being in a new place or if ive done something wrong? i dropped two worms into his tank for him to eat if he gets ready, but im nervous as he's very thin and i want him to get some nutrition.
