NEVER buy from Underground Reptiles, and here’s why...

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 09:22 AM PDT

Sorry for formatting, I'm on mobile

Hello, my experience, along with many others here with this company isn't great, the reason why the Axolotls from this company is so cheap is because

  1. They're products of generations and generations of incest

  2. They usually arrive disease ridden or extremely unhealthy

  3. They sell the Axolotls extremely young, when I got mine shipped he didn't even have his hind legs.

  4. They sometimes refuse to refund customers even when the axolotl is a DOA, their customer service is horrible and not worth your money.

  5. Last thing, the way they ship is horrible, there's no ice packs or anything, when I received mine it had a box with styrofoam, 2 paper towels and a plastic bag that was leaking, the poor thing barely half a bag of water with barely no air in the bag. The paper towels were wet, it's no way to ship an axolotl.

All in all if you're gonna buy an axolotl, buy it from a more reputable breeder, or store like "Ivy's Axolotls" "BuyAnAxolotl" places dedicated to the animal itself, thanks for reading and I hope this helped.

Little one is finally starting to get some length and filament growth to her gills, the shop I bought her from was keeping her in horrible conditions.

Das the face of someone who's had a worm

Why is his head such a strange shape. I’ve only noticed this now but I’m not too sure how long it’s been like this, a few days to a week maybe. He scraped his head quite a while ago but I doubt this has anything to do with that

Decided to start an Axolotl Rescue in my area

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 09:32 AM PDT

A few weeks ago, someone contacted me regarding an axolotl that was sick and near death. At the time, they had two - and by the time they contacted me, one already passed away, and the other was just barely holding on. So i took him home and took care of him until he was healthy again - and made the decision to keep him for myself and not return him to his owner. This sparked the idea that there should be an axolotl rescue in my area - and surrounding areas - where these sick axolotls can have a second chance at life. Since then, i rescued two more golden albino females who were also in similar condition. Now, i branded myself as an axolotl rescue and will adopt out these guys once they return to full health. You can see some photos in my link :)

I was shipped a 1 inch axolotl, that’s still growing his hind legs, I don’t know how to care for it, please help me

So never shop at Underground Reptiles for Axolotls, yes they're cheap, but they give way way way to young axo's, I had to redo my whole 20 gallon, it's currently running a sponge filter and an underwater canister filter (made for turtles but good for Axolotls too) I had to take out all the sand and the tank is bear now with a few flat rocks for grip, and a few fake plants, I have blood worms for him, but I don't know what else to do, what does he need? I don't know if he's healthy or not, I'm so confused on the matter, he's swimming around like normal, his gills are big, for his size, but they're small so I can't notice any white fuzz or anything

I'll be picking up this boy/girl on Sunday! It's my 1st axolotl. Does he/she look okay?

Hi everybody! I just wanted to ask if anyone knows what my axies Rico and Boris are doing? They keep squeaking when they come to the top of the tub I have them in. Currently doing 100% water changes and keeping in tub until tank water cycled.

Idk if my axolotl will make it through the day

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:23 AM PDT

Today is the last really hot day before I can get my aquarium chiller, but today is supposed to get so hot that I'm sure the water will get up to 80. Usually I have someone home to replace water bottles and take care of it but I recently moved and now I have no one to do that. I love her so much, but I'm so afraid when I come back from work it will have gotten too hot and she'll be dead. Idk what to do. I'm just hoping it turns out all right.

New to axolotls!

Posted: 05 Jun 2020 07:07 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm new to this group and just got my first axolotl last week! I have had a great time with her so far but I just have a few questions. She is around 5 inches long and her gills are really big, she has her gills curved a little bit almost all the time. At first I was worried something was wrong but her water conditions are all perfect and she has no current in her tank, she is also eating and pooping completely fine and acting normal. Is it normal for some axolotls to have curved gills most of the time? My second question was just about her feeding habits. I feed her the hikari sinking pellets and earthworms (she doesn't love bloodworms, which is weird I think!) I was just wondering if it's better to feed her live earthworms or the vacuum packed ones?

Help with filter please! see comments

Axolotl HATES earth worms, lol. He refuses to eat them, cut up, alive, dead etc. only blood worms for him. Any tips? Do I need to feed him more than blood worms? I’m trying

A bit of a conundrum...

Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:13 PM PDT

Hi all, great to see there's a healthy subreddit for Axolotl care. I'm in a little bit of a pickle. I picked up two Axolotls today and was told by the lady at the store that they were relatively low maintenance. I was recommended the fluval flex 9 gallon kit for the two babies I picked out after I told her I own 3 cats and needed a lid. After some research I see it's not an ideal environment because it's way too small, the filter is built in and the cooling options are limited. Now I'm not blaming her, as I definitely should have done more research and all this could have been avoided. Anyways the problems that have arisen after some research are

  1. Temperature of the tank (I live in a state where summers get hot) and I cannot use fans with an aquarium lid. Is my only option a 300+ dollar chiller?
  2. I did not cycle out my tank for a couple weeks as this was not mentioned to me and in my excitement it didn't come to my mind. (They're already in there after I had done water tests and eliminating chlorine, etc.)
  3. The built in filter is most likely too powerful for them. I have left the tank half filled as they're young lotls and don't want them to have to travel all the to the top. So I haven't used the filter yet.

Basically my plan is to start a new build and properly cycle it. One that is maybe 30 gallons, longer than my current. I'd appreciate feedback on what to do about the lack of cycling, if I can raise the water level to the top and run the built in filter to ease water changes

My girlfriend and I are already really attached and would much rather invest and give them a good home with us than return them. Thanks ahead for your Help and understanding and sorry for the long post! :))
