I changed you to a temporary 10 gallon, to a 30 gallon tank, and you give me faces like this. (He just wants more food)

Couldn’t find the space to upgrade my tank, but then my FIL, a carpenter by trade, said we could build a custom set-up together. Here’s my concept vs to-scale idea for a tank stand/bookshelf. Finally, I’ll get to move Sir Henry from a 30 gal to a 125 gal with enough space to get him a friend!

Goldfish Tank Setup Questions/Pre-work

Posted: 10 May 2020 12:08 AM PDT

Hi Folks!

I'm doing some pre-work/homework on setting up a goldfish tank before I get the actual fish. I recently obtained a 55 gallon tank. I've been looking into what items I need to get this tank up and running. I am already familiar with the fishless cycle process and I am planning to go the fishless cycle method before adding any fish. I hoping to make this their permanent home. The only time they would be removed from the tank is if I need to quarantine them or treat them for anything that can't be done in the main tank. I already have stressguard, prime, stability, etc. on hand (anything that a typical fish or betta fish needs) as I currently am raising a betta fish. If there is something goldfish specific that I should be aware of/have on hand, let me know and I can stock it in advance.

Number of fish expected for this tank: 2 Fancy Goldfish – I'm think about fantails? (I really like flowy tails lol)

Tank: 55 Gallon Tank

Filter: Fluval FX4High Performance Aquarium Canister Filter

Media for Filter: (Mechanical) Aquarium Filter Pad - Premium True Dual Density Aquarium Filter Media Roll for Crystal Clear Water, (Biological) Fluval Biomax Filter Media, (Chemical) Fluval Zeo-Carb

Heater: boxtech Submersible Aquarium Heater—300w

Substrate: none, I want this to be a barebottom tank

Lights: Tank comes with light, but I do take rec

Air Stone/Air Pump: ?? Tetra Whisper Air Pump for Deep Water Applications (Up to 150 Gallons) ??

Decorations: River stones with some live plants (java ferns, moss, etc.)—I don't mind if the goldfish nibble here and there (or just devour it lol).

As mentioned, when I picked up the 55 gallon tank, it came with a canister filter (Fluval 303), so I think if I use both canisters, I've got more than enough filtration for two fancies?

This is my first time with a canister filter, so if you have a recommendation for a better canister filter or even the media, please feel free to recommend it. I really appreciate all thoughts and advice as I want to make sure I set up the tank right.

Also, I'm a little iffy on the airstone/airpump. I read that goldfish like oxygen rich water, so I was think that maybe this pump would be okay?

Also looking for something silent or close to quiet. If any of the items I listed above are not quiet or silent, please let me know and if you have a recommendation for another item.

Ahh, right! Also, I am cleaning out the used tank with water and vinegar. I was thinking of just using a kitchen sponge, but was wondering if that is okay or if there is a better way to clean it out? Judging by the décor, I suspect it may have been a saltwater tank before. There is a lot of calcium buildup on the glass as well, so I'll be doing a lot of cleaning/scrubbing.

I'm also looking for fantails with a specific color/look to them. If you have any recommendations, I'm more than happy to look up the seller/vendor and see if they have what I'm looking for. Happy to PM you what I'm looking for specifically if you know a vendor or know someone who sells fantails…especially if they're willing to do quarantine (even if at an additional cost/fee).

Thank you so much in advance and I appreciate any and all advice!

What other things can live with my goldfish?

Posted: 09 May 2020 08:23 PM PDT

Sorry if this is a repost, I didn't find much in my search. I'm looking for other things (snails, shrimp, frogs, etc.) that can live with my feeder goldfish. There are ten of them in an outdoor pond (~150 gallon trough, zone 8b, no tech, fed by my gutters with an overflow). I know this is a lot of fish for that volume so other fish are probably out. Are there other things that the goldfish won't kill but can also survive the winter?

Spinning goldfish

Posted: 09 May 2020 07:13 PM PDT

Hey all, I need some help. Around the 20th of April, I noticed that one of my fish had started exhibiting occasional "spinning"--this is sometimes a head-over-tail spin, like a pinwheel, or a vertical head-down spin, or sometimes even a barrel-roll type spin.

The first thought was advanced swim bladder disease, but that seemed unlikely and I've been feeding only peas for the last three weeks with no improvement. Whirling disease was my next thought, but no new living thing has been introduced to the tank in years, so I don't know how a parasite could have been introduced. Final theory was nitrate poisoning, so we did daily water changes for about a week after I noticed symptoms and have now upped the water change frequency. I tested the water after symptoms began and all the levels were fine.

There has been no improvement in three weeks. The fish doesn't do this constantly; I've noticed he does it most when he gets startled, but it's pretty violent when it happens. He seems to be hiding a little more often now, but otherwise isn't exhibiting signs of stress: no clamped fins, still shiny, still eating normally. It is only him and one other fish (both about 3 inches long) in a 60gal tank. The other fish hasn't shown any symptoms.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be or what I could do differently to treat him? I don't know if he's in pain. If he is, should we consider euthanasia? I have no idea what to do at this point and I'm worried that he's suffering. He's almost 8 years old and has had a good long life, but I'm not ready to say goodbye to him yet. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks :)

Thought I was having issues with my cycle, turns out it’s the tap water. What to do when tap water is reading 0.25 ammonia? Tap is left, tank is right.

I have two goldfish that are refusing to eat with one of them laying on it's side.

Posted: 09 May 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I have two goldfish(fancy and a comet) in 50 gallon tank, they were perfectly fine and happy till I decided to use tetra cleaning bacteria to help keep the water clear. About a week after using the tetra cleaning bacteria, they stopped eating, so I decided to feed them some peas thinking they were just constipated, they ate the peas for a few day than stopped eating all together and after a week of not eating the comet gold fish is laying on his side at the bottom of the tank while the fancy gold fish still swims fine. I also noticed they poop clear, stringy poop. FYI the fancy gold fish is 4 years old while the comet is 3 years old, this is the first they've been sick since having them. I ordered Api general cure and a test kit, but with my luck my local post office managed to loose it leaving me with nothing.

Swim bladder :(

Posted: 09 May 2020 03:40 PM PDT

My stupid goldfish keeps gulping air and this morning has been having trouble swimming. I love him but he's an idiot.

Here's hoping he recovers quickly, and may learn to follow his siblings and realise food is best found at the bottom of the tank.

Can you add calcium to the tank while fish/snail are in it?

Posted: 09 May 2020 11:27 AM PDT

As per my testing strips, my tank water is very soft. My fish is fine, but I have an Inca snail in there and his shell is starting to deteriorate. Can I add calcium while they're in the tank? I know with pH you're supposed to remove any animals when you're tampering with that.

fish keeps getting stuck in plastic plants

Posted: 09 May 2020 02:54 PM PDT

Hey guys, my fish has gotten stuck in plastic plants 3 times in the past 2 days. The plants have been there for months so it seems weird that he looks like he's stuck and can't move, since it's never happened before. Once I move the plant he starts going again and is fine. Any idea why this might be happening? Thanks!

Hi there! First post. I've noticed the scales on this guy look odd on one side. Is there something wrong with him?

Looking to add an algae eating creature to my tank.

Posted: 09 May 2020 11:58 AM PDT

So after doing some reasearch I have been thinking abiut adding another member to my current tank. I have a 35 gal fresheater tank with gravel, few live plants(grass) some decorations, tank naturally sits at about 75°f and two comets(one is roughly 4 inches and the other 2 inches) my tank algae isnt horrible, especially after a tip to limit light time but the way I have the tank set up and some of the decorations I have it would be a mess to take it apart to clean. (Yes I'm lazy. Also I'd light to be able to leave their brighter light on more.) I was thinking a pelco(the one with the whiskers) because their temp range is 75-80 but im really new to fish in general. Is that a good fish to add? What kind of food supplement would be best for it, and are there any other glaring reasons why I shouldnt add one of those?

So I have a comet goldfish and my tank looks pretty empty so I wanted to add plants to it. Any tips on how to start or what plants are good for them?
