my biggest boy Flash - any one else just like to sit and watch their fish?

This currently empty and once goldfish pond is at my boyfriends family beach house. We have tanks, but have never thought about a goldfish pond. The liner has tears in it and it’s full of muck and frogs Any thoughts if this would work where we don’t live and what steps to take?

I wanted the snails to enjoy their courgette in peace. Landgraab did not appreciate this egregious violation of her rights.

Please help?! My goldfishes keeps going to the top of the surface for oxygen. It’s stressing me out. I don’t like seeing them like this. The ammonia is high too. ☹️

Today I discovered that my goldfish tank harbors a colony of these things. I was horrified when I rinsed off my plants and pulled my arm out of the bucket to find it covered in little shrimp monsters. I have no clue where they came from.

Getting a bigger tank and am hoping to clarify a few things. Size, setup, equipment, plants and a buddy?

Posted: 20 May 2020 10:02 PM PDT

I posted the other day about my light burning out. I was told my tank was way too small, so I have been reading and looking here and feel like a very bad fish daddy.

The goldfish was won at the fair and a guide I read said it might be a comet goldfish. It is about 1.5 - 2" long. My son won him At the fair about 2 years ago.

It sounds like I need a 20 or 30 gallon tank for him. If I want to add a buddy, I would need a 45-50 gallon tank. Is that correct? Is a square tank or rectangular tank better? Although I like the round tanks, they seem to be a bit weird to me as I saw someone say they may not be good for fish.

I want to use sand and live plants. I saw some grass that would look so good, but from what I am reading, the goldfish would most likely uproot all of it. My guy doesn't seem to eat the plant in his tank now. It floats and he will swim in it (which I love).

I saw a few lists of plants to get, but my question is about the fish swimming in it. Is there a plant that the fish likes to swim in and around?

For decorating the tank, i am guessing I should not buy anything he can swim in such as under a drawbridge or into a castle, is that right? I see those, but I originally put something like that in his tank and took it out as I was worried it would hurt him. For the plants (grass if possible), it sounds like I need to get the proper type of glue/adhesive and glue the plants to rocks or decorations or whatever.

Buddy fish: I see a few comments about the goldfish getting lonely and that they should have a friend. I will try to get the same kind, but is there a problem with adding a 2nd fish for him to have a friend? I don't want the fish to fight.

I want to buy the bigger tank ASAP, but want to make sure I am doing it properly. I see some really nice tanks on Amazon. If I buy a tank at Petsmart, it sounds like I need to buy the aquarium and the accessories separately and not as a kit.

Thank you all for the help.

Behavior question

Posted: 20 May 2020 08:38 PM PDT

TL/DR: My lionhead goldfish pushes around my two telescopes at feeding time and I'm looking for advice on what to do.

I currently have three fancy goldfish who share a 30 gallon tank - a lionhead, a black moor, and a calico telescope. The lionhead has always been pushy with the other two, especially at food time. He will go right up to the other two and use his head to push them out of the way. (I feed Repashy Gold gel food so it sinks.) I always watch to make sure the other two get food, and the lionhead tends to chill after feeding. However tonight I noticed my black moor has some tattered fins, especially his tail. The other guy seems okay. My question is, is the lionhead's behavior at feeding time normal, or is it causing too much stress on my other two that it's becoming a problem? They've lived together in the tank fine for several months now. Water parameters are all normal - I check weekly and do a 25% water change weekly. They are still young fish - only about 2 inches each, so the 30 gallon tank is plenty big for them. I'm unsure what I can do at this point, and am wondering if maybe the lionhead shouldn't be in a tank with telescopes? Any feedback would be great!

Goldfish gulping but checked all the usual suspects

Posted: 20 May 2020 08:16 PM PDT

I have two black moors in a 40gal breeder and I watch them all day. They spend more time apparently gulping at the surface than I would expect. When I watch them they stop. They are otherwise active and eat as normal. Reasons this might be okay:

  • I surface-feed them sinking pellets.
  • I have quite a few floating plants - duckweed gets dropped in from another tank every few days and there's a large of water sprite at the top.

Things I've checked:

  • temperature - hovers between 65-70. No chiller, no heater. Indoor room temp is between 69-75.

  • ammonia/nitrite = zero

  • pH near 7

  • no sign of fungus, disease, etc

  • running two sponge filters with internal airstones split on a high-powered air pump (math says it can do 120gallons) AND a HOB aquaclear 70

  • weekly (if not more) 50% water changes with Prime

  • nothing otherwise off about the fish; they did have ich when i first got them last year. not on meds

  • bare bottom tank with a dozen plants or so

I need some stock tank prep help...

Posted: 20 May 2020 06:24 PM PDT

I just received my stock tank today and decided to wash it out with dish soap without putting much thought into it. I then wiped it down with vinegar and rinsed it again.

My questions are these: did I clean it out well enough? Should I be worried about my two 8 year old goldfish being harmed by this somehow? What are your suggestions for cleaning out the stock tank? Thoughts? Comments?

Thanks for the help!

Goldfish begging for food by "clicking"?

Posted: 20 May 2020 11:21 AM PDT

Hello all,

Does does else fish make popping and spitting noises when it's around feeding time?

Mine just started this recently (right after I started adding some frozen foods to their diet), which I am taking as a sign of begging for food.

I have two young fancy goldfish in a 20 gallon, running three sponge filters and a hob with a sponge prefilter, bio rings, and carbon. My water params are normal, and both fish seem perfectly normal and healthy. Water changes are sunday and Wednesday, and gravel vacuum happens on sundays.

Does anyone else have this happen? It is surprisingly loud for such a small animal.

Edit: here is a pic of the fish and a video of it happening: https://m.imgur.com/a/jDhpImm

We're getting a new pond! What kind of goldfish should we get?

Posted: 20 May 2020 04:17 PM PDT

We got a 35-gallon pot on sale at our local home store (we made sure to get one that wasn't painted or fiberglass or anything that could poison the fish) and we're going to spend the next 2 weeks or so sealing the holes, cycling the water and getting plants to turn it into a small porch pond. Houhou is a common, so the pond wouldn't be suitable for her and I'd prefer to keep her in my room anyways. A goldfish pond has been a dream of mine for years, but I never stopped to consider what ones would actually be best for the pond because I didn't know there were more than, like 2 kinds of goldfish. A black moor or ryukin looks appealing, though I like orandas too (and if their wens overgrow, I have lots of clove oil on hand anyhow and I'm accustomed to making precise and delicate cuts with scissors and knives, though with clay and foam and not living flesh). Which two fancies would be best for a 35-gallon pond? I also have very little money to buy fish since I'm not an adult, so nothing super expensive. I'm also open to any koi that may be suitable. Thanks in advance.
