My ranchus, Umeboshi and Ketchup. I luv them so much.

Just learned how to groom goldfishes. A before and after shot within a span of 2 months but just recently started grooming 2 weeks ago. Chonky boi

Would anyone be able to identify my two rescue fish? Previous owner said they were goldfish but I have doubts they might be koi (I'd have to re-home them in a pond) :(

Comet goldfish water parameters update

Posted: 06 May 2020 08:01 PM PDT

Hi again everyone! I gave in and bought the api water testing kit for my goldfish after I made this postand a fellow redditor made I just tested the water and got the following results back.

PH High range: 8.2 ph (booklet said 7.5 is ideal) Ammonia: .5 ppm (booklet said 0 was ideal) Nitrite: 5.0 ppm (booklet said 0 was ideal) Nitrate: 5.0 ppm (booklet said 40.0 was ideal)

So, I was horrified with this results and did an immediate 30~35% water change along with vacuuming up the surface and subsurface of my goldfishes sand. I removed as much waste as possible and cleaned everything that could be cleaned besides the filter cartridge.

But heres where I also might have fucked up. When putting new water in, I forgot to put the water conditioner and bacterial supplement in to the new water before I put the new water in the tank. In panic I put the water conditioner and the bacterial supplement as directed on the bottles.

My goldfish is currently in the tank and she seems to be doing fine at the moment but I'm keeping a close eye on her. I'll be doing a water test again in the next couple of days to let the new water settle. I'm just a fish dad who's worried out of his mind and looking to make the fish tank as ideal as possible for my gosh dang little goldfish.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated, I'm just getting into keeping the tank parameters ideal. I'm new to all these tests and water parameters and such so go easy on me, thank you!!!

Red spots on goldfish, insight appreciated!

Posted: 06 May 2020 07:37 PM PDT

Hi all, hoping someone here can help me out with identifying (and possibly intervening on?) these red spots on my goldfish. I've had the fish approximately 8 months and shortly after getting him noticed a red spot below his mouth and later a couple more on his body. Ive been watching them over the last months but haven't done anything since they appear grossly stable in size and the fish is very active and eating well. I asked the generally knowledgeable employee at my local pet store and he suggested possibly a parasite or a tumor. He suggested continued observation or adding some aquarium salt if I was particularly concerned.

Recently I noticed a much larger lesion on the tail fin, close to the tail base. Its possible I just missed it before since its kinda hard to see but it could also be new. I'm hoping somebody could shed some light on what these marks are and what if anything I can do about them. Water quality is good now but was pretty rough for the first month or so and required every other day changes as I (accidentally) cycled the tank with the fish in it.

the only other inhabitants of the tank are two snails; a mystery snail and a black snail of a different type. I know the black snail could tolerate addition of salt (the pet store employee said they need brackish water to breed) but not sure about the mystery snail. Here are pictures of the red spots:

Ranchu Not Acting Himself - Advise?

Posted: 06 May 2020 07:13 PM PDT

Hi all, I have a young Ranchu, little less than 2 years, that hasn't been acting himself (possible herself). I have had him since he was very young and he has been my baby! About a week and a half ago Charles (my Ranchu) started looking a little more lethargic than usual. He has always had such a wonderful and bubbly personality, always so excited to say hi to mom and dad, for feedings, to swim with his buddy Pumpkin (the one other Ranchu). The last week however, he has been very lethargic, trying to say hi but getting exhausted half way swimming up the tank and having to go lay back down on the substrate to rest. He hasn't been eating like normal either. He still has great spirits (he hasn't "given up" if you know what I mean) but he just seems exhausted. Water parameters are perfect, tank mates (the other Ranchu and some Cory cats) are cheery and healthy as ever, water temp is stable, plenty of circulation and O2, healthy diet (flakes, peas, blood worms and Chlorella) I am at a complete loss. I have tried Epsom salt, adding some vitamin supplements to the water/food, water changes... I don't know what else I can do or what is wrong with him. I asked our go-to pet store (specialty store and they are wonderful), they recommended the same things we have been doing/trying. The only other two things I can possibly think of are (1) constipation or (2) the Ranchu are trying to mate...? I haven't seen much pooping from Charles, but he also hasn't been eating much. After closer inspection it does look like Charles could be a female Charles and Pumpkin a male, but I am not seeing much chasing (I did get up at dawn to observe)? I haven't tested for eggs because I am worried about stressing Charles out even more... any ideas or recommendation? Anything is helpful. Thanks in advance for all your help!!

Can anyone help me?

Posted: 06 May 2020 07:32 AM PDT

Issue with tank or with the fish? My oranda often floats upside down (it’s still alive) but starts swimming normally after a short period. This has been happening for about a week so I ordered water testing kits and swimbladder treatment. The tank is 45l and I do water changes weekly.

We removed our fancies from the tank to cycle it, suddenly these clusters of white specks appeared. My girlfriend thinks they could be eggs but our fish haven’t been in the tank for about a week. What are these things?

Just saved these 2 beautiful baby oranda from a dirty bucket, right now they are living in a 15l tank and seem to be doing alright. Any advice on how to move forward once they start to grow would be appreciated

Tank and moving suggestions!!

Posted: 06 May 2020 04:08 PM PDT

Hey y'all I'm moving in about a month, Right now I'm managing a bunch of different tanks, I have around 10 fancies but I really want to upgrade some of them to a 120 gallon tank and was wondering if you had any suggestions for quality and reasonable prices. Also what's the best way to move them to my new place, we are moving to a new house down the street. Should I bag them?

Goldfish swimming up and down the glass

Posted: 06 May 2020 12:05 PM PDT

So I have a small little Comet goldfish inside a 55 gallon tank. I clean the water regularly, feed him properly and make sure he's all happy swimming around the tank.

Sometimes though he goes and hangs around one side of the tank and swims up and down the glass especially the corner of the tank. He doesn't seem to be stressed or sick, he leaves the wall and will swim around the entire tank.

Just curious as to why that may be and if I need to do something differently?

Swim bladder problem

Posted: 06 May 2020 06:12 AM PDT

So glad this sub exists!

Alright so my goldfish has a swim bladder problem. He floats upside down at the top of the tank unless he's actively swimming around. He seems happy other than that and is always hungry. But I've seen him struggle a bit to get down sometimes and I don't know if he's suffering and it makes me sad.

I've done research online and tried everything. I changed the water out entirely, more than once. I got a brand new filter, got plants, fed him peas, holidays from feeding, sinking pellets, everything. I tried to get a swim bladder treatment online but it was sold out and people said it didn't work anyway.

Just wondering if anyone has any other ideas. I've cried so many tears over this poor fish and spent so much time worrying about it and I don't know what to do.

What's up with my goldfish!

Posted: 06 May 2020 09:13 AM PDT

So I have a 2 year old goldfish living in an outdoor pond (UK) with 3 others. It's unfiltered and no pump, the pond has just always ran off a natural cycle of the plants ect. Never had any problems and I regularly check the water quality with a test stick. Until today, my brother pointed out that one of my goldfish has got lots of black marks all on her sides and face. What should I do? Water quality test came back fine and the other 3 are normal, no unusual marks. To note, the goldfish in question is still behaving as usual and eating ect. I'm quite worried 😔😢

I just saved these 2 beautiful baby oranda and for the moment they are living in a 10l tank. Any advice for when they start to grow? They are doing fine for now, we'll better than in a dirty shallow bucket.
