Are goldfish a good pet for a college student?

Posted: 02 May 2020 11:17 PM PDT

Hello, next year I'm going away to school and will miss my dog. As, I love animals, I am considering getting goldfish. I will, of course, check with my roommate and wait until I get adjusted to school for a few months before I make this decision! I was wondering how much effort it is to keep these little guys alive and happy. I am willing to put in like an hour of effort daily in terms of cleaning, etc. I'm not looking to just keep some fish in an empty tank and leave them there! I'm willing to learn about how to provide for their needs and put in the effort. After all, I think it is important to give them as best of a life as I can provide! On average, how much effort do you put in to keep the fish healthy, fed, clean aquarium, etc in a day?

I messed up

Posted: 02 May 2020 10:24 PM PDT

Hello everyone, so as some of you might know, my goldfish laid eggs quite recently! With this being said, I just hatched a baby goldfish. I feel like an idiot. I kept some of the eggs because I thought I might have accidentally fertilized some (surprise! I did) and now one has hatched. I am incredibly attached to this newly born baby, so if anyone can give me some tips, that would greatly be appreciated! I am about to indulge in research and hope I keep this baby alive. Also, please keep in mind I didn't think I got ANY milt out of my male goldfish and I thought that in order for him to stop harassing my female, he had to get all of his milt out. Upon the second day of research regarding goldfish breeding, I realized this wasn't the case, but I had kept some of the eggs just in case. This baby was just hatched today and is in a Tupperware with mostly non-fertilized eggs (only one more looks fertilized). Should I move him to clean water? He seems so small and delicate.

(Help) red spot on side of goldfish?

Posted: 02 May 2020 01:11 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I've got a fancy goldfish and fantail in a 55 gallon cycled tank. This random red spot just appeared a couple of days ago (photos linked below) and I'm not sure what exactly it is. Any ideas on what it is/how to treat?

Water params: Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate ~10

Any tips on raising PH levels?

Posted: 02 May 2020 10:45 AM PDT

I just went to feed my goldfish and noticed one is pineconing! So I checked the water parameters, the ammonia was just starting to raise so I've added some ammonia remover. Everything else was good levels appart from the PH. I've always struggled with low PH I'm constantly adding PH but it doesn't last very long especially with regular water changes. I've separated the goldfish and have started treatment so hopefully it will recovered as my other fish did when I was given it with dropsy a few months ago (that fish has gone no where near my other goldies). Can a low PH cause pineconing? Anyone got any tried and tested products or methods of raising the PH?

Is there a way to give a Medal of Honor to my Goldfish?

Posted: 02 May 2020 08:57 AM PDT

I have a cult (or so I like to call it) of 7 Comet Goldfish and they're each about 3-5 inches long in my 20 gallon tank. I feed them sinking pellets because they like them and a few weeks ago a fight broke out over a pellet. There was 3 goldfish fighting and one of them was getting really feisty and tried to come and gnaw Cola-fish (he's named that because I accidentally dropped him into a Coke can (with coke in it) when doing my weekly water change and he survived in it for 2 minutes until I found out where he fell) and one of my smaller 3 inch fish took the hit for him, like a navy soldier tanking a shot for his teammate. I immediately got him into a five gallon recovery tank I had set up for times like this and he had a small hole in him from the other fish. It wasn't bleeding but I needed to tend to his recovery tank at all times just to make sure he doesn't get infected, so I used some medicine even though he wasn't sick, just to make sure no bacteria can get in. He's fully recovered and it's not even noticeable.

What a friend.
