Picture of the Month Contest Strikes Back!

Posted: 03 May 2020 12:23 PM PDT

Hello lovely users of /r/bettafish,

After a long loooong looooooong hiatus the Picture of the Month contest is back!

To make this return as inclusive as possible, round 25 will have no specific theme. Full tank shots, photobombs, close ups, (your own) artwork, shitty photoshopped memes, regular pictures, anything betta can enter!

The only rules are:

  • The picture must include a clearly visible betta you own, or have owned.
  • You can only submit one picture.
  • No shitty tanks (or bad care in general) or ill fish!

You can enter you picture by sending it to our modmail with the subject "POTM#25". The submission persiod starts now, and will last until the 31st of may. After that, you'll all have a week to vote on your favorite picture.

As always, the winner will get a special flair and his/her picture will be the sidebar picture for a month unless we mess up again... Check out the previous winners for inspiration (or just because they're pretty) HERE.

We're looking forward to seeing all the pretty bettas!

How I Accidentally Wound Up With Two Bettas (An Epic Tale)

Posted: 05 May 2020 06:29 AM PDT

Last Friday, Wet Puppy (formerly A Fish Has No Name) went missing. I had done a huge water change Thursday night and all was well. I fed him the next morning and all was just dandy. However, Friday afternoon - NO FISH.

FYI the tank in question is a Marineland Portait 5gal, which I love.

So I waited a full day. Searched high and low, every nook and cranny, INCLUDING the filter compartment. Multiple times. I was absolutely certain that Wet Puppy was gone for good. Saturday morning, I called Jungle Aquatics and was assured they were open and had bettas (because I can't have an empty tank). I showered. I got dressed. I put on a BRA. Then I drove for miles and miles. Found the store and spent a good 45 minutes deciding on the perfect betta. I ultimately chose a mostly white male dumbo half moon (and more snails). New fish is gorgeous and lively and settles into his new home with ease. While gazing upon his frisky antics, a good hour or more after releasing him into the 5gal tank, I hear a faint tap.

...

...

I lift the lid to the filter compartment and GUESS WHO HAS BEEN THERE THE WHOLE DAMN TIME?!?

It's worth noting that I have the filter compartment stuffed with the pump, bio-balls, and tons of micro fine poly-fiber batting for filtration. We're talking MAYBE a whole cubic inch of space left.

Fortunately for all involved, I still had Wet Puppy's original 1gal tank set up, filtered, planted, and ready for emergencies. This was an emergency. The net I have is the perfect size for scooping little shits, I mean fish, out of small spaces.

Long story short - Wet Puppy is now Houdini and new fishy is Usurper.

Now I have another 5gal tank and accessories on the way.

Also, I am a bad fish mom.

Not the best quality, but this is just one week’s progress! Dee’s fins have already filled in and I’m seeing a little more color on the body. Excited to see what his true colors are!

I didn't think I'd be able to choose a betta so easily...then I saw him. Welcome home, Azure!

Lil eating noises

Posted: 05 May 2020 06:49 AM PDT

So a few days a week I feed my betta pellets bc he absolutely loves them and omg!!! He makes lil munching noises when he eats at the top of the tank!!! It's genuinely one of the cutest things I've ever witnessed and I feel b l e s s e d to see it. If you haven't noticed your betta doing it I would 10/10 recommend listening in when feeding them hard food. It's the best part of my day really I love these lil guys sm

Last year we lost our first betta friend after following the (terrible) recommendations from the pet store. Now after a lot of research and effort we have managed to keep this beauty healthy and happy for a long time

I’ve been caring for my betta wrong for two years. Is it safe to change his environment now?

Posted: 05 May 2020 07:02 AM PDT

So I just stumbled upon this subreddit and realized from the care taking forum that I have been caring for my betta wrong for the last 2 years. He is currently in a 1 gallon fish bowl with the water changed monthly or when it begins to get cloudy. I do not have a water heater or a filtration system. He has a hide out, some plants, and a leaf hammock in his bowl. I feed him betta flakes that I ordered from amazon and when his fins begin to look "sad" (for lack of a better word) I use betta fix. I want to give Penny (his tail is a bright copper color) the best home possible but don't want to hurt him by changing things too drastically too quickly. Any advice for beginning to make adjustments? TIA
