220 gallon tank crashed and rebuilding. Would love your input!

Regrettably, my tank died late last year and it's been difficult staring at a 220 gallon swamp for the past few months.

Part of the challenge I've had was that due to my severe arthritis, I haven't been able to maintain it properly - and thus have always had someone maintain it for me. Thus, since it's now time to start from scratch, I figured I'd try to build it the right way so that it's easier for me to maintain.

Currently, it's 36x48x30 - and the 30" height makes it too difficult for me to go in. So, I'm having a custom tank built for me that's still 36x48 - but shorter (likely 18") so I can reach in without straining.

My baby

I wanted to give the budget tight for this, so I figured I'd keep using the same lights/stand/sump/equipment, but would just replace the tank.

With that said, here's how you can help! I'd love to know from your experience - if you were to start again, in building a mixed reef with as much livestock as possible (I love fish), how would you do it?

Some questions for thought

  1. My current setup is two corner drains and returns - would you recommend going centre? Or one on each side?
  2. To maximize maintenance efficiency, would you keep a substrate? I've been debating going bare as it would leave the bottom easier to clean - thoughts?
  3. Any other things you'd love to see on a custom acrylic tank? We're likely going Eurobrace - thoughts?

Much thanks for your help in advance.

Cheers

My first ever reef tank, goin on 7 months old now. Built on a budget (I’m a broke college student!) following Inappropriate Reefer’s nano budget build series on YouTube. Tank was bought for $3 at Goodwill!

[5g] I know it’s not much but it’s a nice, easy start! Any suggestions for add-ons? Currently using base MarineLand Contour 5 setup with 100w heater.

Who has experience with these? Tons of mixed reviews about them online. It will be in a biocube 29 with stock return pump (might upgrade one day).
