Time lapse of one of my Walstad tanks! Sparkling Gourami, Exclamation Point Rasbora, Scarlet Badis, Ghost Shrimp, and a Ramshorn snail colony to help my feed my Pea Puffer, who’s living large in another tank in my fish room.

Mini rant

Posted: 09 Apr 2020 11:07 AM PDT

I have a 22gal tank that's been up for about 9 months. It's planted and I do weekly maintenance. Currently inhabited by 2 pygmy cories (I bought the last two at the shop, before quarantine, expecting to be able to get more sooner), and 6 cherry shrimp.

Here's my deal. My test kit reads 0-0-0 with a pH of about 8.2. It's consistently been this way. My problem is that I lose shrimp whenever doing a water change of more than 2-3 gallons. It had been a while since I did a larger change, so last night I did a little less than 5gal. Today 2 shrimp are dead. The cories have done well since I got them over a month ago.

I use Prime, Excel and Flourish consistently per recommended dosages. I never have a problem unless it's the larger water change.

My thought is that maybe the change in pH is too much for them. My tap water source reads about 8.0ph.

I'm just looking for any tips or thoughts cause I don't know if I'm going to buy more shrimp in the future.
