He went to go play in the bubbler, got covered in sand, and damn near gave his mother a heart attack with all that white powder. This is the face of a man with NO regrets.

What's wrong with my comet?

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:31 PM PDT

Yesterday my goldfish was perfectly fine, aside from having a slightly large belly (admittedly he's been eating a little too much). Today I woke up to him having bumps on his bottom right side about below the dorsal fin. My gf fed the tank this morning I'm hoping he just over ate and it's not ringworm or some other infection. It's mostly on the right side, his left side looks fine for the most part.

Please help my little Jotaro.

Possible tumor? Help on how to treat

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:28 PM PDT

I have a single black moor goldfish in a 20 gallon tank (I know that's on the lower side of the tank recs, and that they're social fish, so my plan is to upgrade to a larger tank with a pal or two when my living situation permits). There's going to be a lot of info but I appreciate any advice.

TANK HISTORY: I got the tank set up back in September (cycles before he was added), and since late October he's been living with six ramshorn snails. Added live pants around that time too. About three weeks ago I replaced the small gravel substrate with aquarium sand since this community is pro sand and he was putting a lot of rocks in his mouth. He did well with the change and likes the sand, though I've noticed he passes sand in his stool so kind of worried about that. I still have my old gravel just in case it's not a good fit but no one on the internet seems that concerned about it. I do weekly 50% water changes. The fish is almost two years old, happy, active, and eating well. Behavior wise I've noticed no changes.

ISSUE: Two days ago I noticed swelling by his right pectoral fin. Just a slight lump. I feel like it's gotten a little more noticeable since then. The scales aren't raised quite yet, but I feel like they may start to raise soon. Again, no clamped fins, discoloration, or change in mood or behavior. Nothing has changed except the formation of that lump. If anything I feel like he's been hungrier than normal. He's still very active around the tank. Here's a couple pics if anyone's interested but he's a wiggely black moor so pretty hard to picture.

I'm stuck on what to do and how aggressive I should be with treatment. I don't want to dose with meds if I don't need to. A tumor obviously has no treatment besides removal or euthanasia if the fish can't live with it. But if it's a bacterial infection or maybe possible parasites, maybe there's action I can take? I noticed small worms on my snails a little after the sand was added. They seem like symbiotic creatures, and will eat detritus from the tank walls and rocks. They act like little whiskers on the snails and I haven't seen any on my fish. Searching google makes me think they're Chaetogaster limnaei worms, like there worms. But with this change maybe they are parasitic?

For now I'm going to do daily water changes and will up the aquarium salt. Yesterday I did fast just to see if the swelling would decrease some (he's not constipated I'm just grasping at straws). But there's a pandemic going on so I'm looking into maybe ordering meds if it gets to that point. I have some 250 mg doxycycline hyclate (API fin & body cure) and some super old herbal relief for bacterial and fungal diseases (pretty much useless). I also have aquarium salt and human use Epsom salt.

My fear is basically this will lead to dropsy which is also a literal dead end. Based on behavior I think a tumor is more likely but it's not external at all. In any case I'm pretty sure there's pressure on organs so I'm worried.

PARAMETERS: (did a water change yesterday but still) pH: 7.4 Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrite: 0 ppm Nitrate: 5-10 ppm Temp: 76 F

If you made it this far thanks for reading. If you have any more questions I'll do my best to answer. I love this little guy and want to help him as much as I can without doing more damage. Thanks!

UPDATE: I just did a 6 gal water change and realized a snail is dead. It was a little one that didn't have too many worms on it. Maybe unrelated, maybe not?

I need help!

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 09:20 PM PDT

My sister set up a tank of 7 comet goldfish in a 120 (they're roughly 4in) and I've now realized that one is malnourished and only 2 1/2in and look a little deeper, and he has skin connecting his bottom and upper lip, with only a gap fitting around 2-3 needle tips when fully open. I would like to know if there is any surgery I can preform to help him.

Goldfish in a bowl?

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 04:44 PM PDT

Hey all! So before I start I just want to say I know that putting goldfish in a bowl is a HUGE no no and I would never want to have this happen long term to any extent but I'm unsure of what to do.

So I have two fish tanks, one is a 15 gallon fluval and the other is a 20 gallon plain tank that right now has minimal water as I'm growing a carpet. In the 15 gallon is a few platies and some cherry barbs. My father came home yesterday with a baby goldfish that I think is an oranda. He's only about an inch long and was given to him by a co worker. I was planning on getting a goldfish for the 20 gallon in the next few weeks once the carpet is finished growing so he thought it would be a good idea. He's one of the cutest goldfish I've ever seen and I'm determined to give him a good life! Here's the issue though. The 20 gallon won't be ready to have him in it for a week or possibly two, and I the cherry barbs in the 15 have already started to nip at his dorsal fin a bit and I'm worried he could get more injured.

So what I'm wondering is if it would be ok to put him in my old 5 gallon bowl that I used to grow fry in for a week or maybe too just to keep him safe? It would have a small filter and an air stone as well as cycled substrate and water.

I feel a bit stuck and I want to know what's best to do! Thank you for any advice you have!

Please confirm my test kit results.

Hello guys, so this is my first time using the API test kit. After comparing it with the chart, (from left to right --> pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate), I believe these are my results.

pH- 7, Ammonia- 0 ppm, Nitrite- 0 ppm, Nitrate- 0 or 0.5ppm? I just wanted to make sure these are the correct results.

Thanks!

50 Gallon?

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:45 PM PDT

Hi! I'm Thomas. I've recently gotten into the aquarium hobby and I have my dad's old 50 gallon just kinda lying around, not really doing anything. Goldfish seem like a fun type to keep, and would be a nice change from having only Bettas my entire life. What kind of goldies could I keep in the 50 gallon? Thanks!

Need some advice for my sick orange telescope butterfly

Posted: 10 Apr 2020 12:38 PM PDT

I've had my two fancy goldfish for almost two years with no problems until now. Recently I've noticed some green dots on my orange butterfly telescopes forehead. Thought it was just some algae until they seem to develop some fluffy trails behind them. Also noticed two white dots on the edges of top fin with similar fluffy trails. The trails seem to grow and then fall off but the spots then reappear. She has also been lethargic and bottom dwelling which is not normal for her. I read some books but I'm not sure if this is fish lice or something else. I'm worried about misdiagnosing and mistreating. I attached pics and video and was hoping you could maybe help. Let me know if you need additional info.

Edit: 37 gallon cycled tank of about 2 years old. Tank parameters: pH 7.6, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 10. Orange telescope butterfly and calico oranda, only fish inhabitants the entire time. Fed either Hikari pellets or repashy gel food daily with fasting days with veggies only. HOB filter with biostones and sponge filter. Also air stone and UV sterilizer. Bare bottom tank. Try to do weekly water changes, sometimes longer. Recent 90% water change to remove algae 2-3 days ago. Removed one java fern plant and couple large rocks at this water change due to butterfly getting stuck in plant. Butterfly was acting normal since water change until today. Oranda has been fine and still is.
