My baby goldfish are growing wonderfully.

I could watch these two for hours. Mind the algae covered pot, I’ve been needing to clean that for a while.

I'm new here, and want to learn about goldfish before getting one! I came across this photo and I am wondering what kind of goldfish it is? Some places said Comet, others Fantail.

My fish has a green looking growth or infection and what looks like a bit of fin rot how can I treat her? She’s 25+ yr old goldfish who lives in a pond.

Goldfish swimming to the top of tank occasionally

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 11:21 PM PDT

So I've had Goldie for a few years now. We have a good tank for him with a filter, I've noticed recently that he goes up to the top of the tank, breathes in a few times then he might occasionally slightly lay over and then he'll just go back down and chill for a bit then repeat the process. He's also made some frantic movements like swimming around quickly for a second then chilling out.

Should I be worried? I love my bud and I'm worried abt him

how big of a tank can i fit on this desk?

how big of a tank can i fit on this desk?

this is my desk. i originally got three goldfish in the 5~7L smaller tank (unprepared), realized it was too small and got a bigger one, which is around 30L. i'm trying to gradually move them into the bigger one.

i know this is still very small and crowded for three goldfish, and i really want to get an at least 80~100L tank as soon as i can. the worker at the shop i got the second tank from said that if it was any bigger than this, my desk wouldn't be able to handle it- i'm really doubting that, i don't want there to be an accident but i feel like i could fit in a bigger tank. i don't really use this table anyways, there's another one next to it that i mainly study in. i could place it in the living room if i really had to, but i don't know if that would be possible. (i'm coming to distrust a lot of the pet shop workers, the one i got the fish from originally gave us two more fish than i wanted for free because "most of them are probably gonna die in a week". i don't think the fish were in very good condition from the start either.)

i got the fish as a birthday present from my family, i originally wasn't planning on getting any but i didn't have much choice. they're acting as if i'm being ridiculous, and think the fish would be fine in the tiny tank. i'm a minor and i payed for most of the purchases for the fish other than the tanks, and i don't know if i can convince my parents to get a bigger one.

i know i'm posting here a LOT but i really want to take good care of them, and i'm constantly worried. i'm doing frequent water changes /tests on both tanks, and trying my best under my circumstances.

am i doing water changes too often?

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:28 PM PDT

i moved one of my goldfish to a new bigger tank yesterday, it kept swimming around erratically and glass-surfing at first but it settled down eventually. today i checked the water parameters on both tanks, and did a water change on both tanks.

i did two 30~40% water changes on the small tank today (to lower the ammonia levels) and the fish are acting normal, but the one in the bigger tank is suddenly acting stressed again. was it too soon to do a water change? how many water changes in one day are too much?

Protruding anus?

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:07 PM PDT

One of my goldfish has what looks like a small protruding thingy. I thinks it's the anus part. Does anyone know if this is bad? She's was getting hit in the stomach by a goldfish about two days ago. I don't know it's it's spawning behavior. But I'm a bit worried. Any help or answers is greatly appreciated!

How long can my goldfish stay in her 10gal?

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:46 PM PDT

I've had Ho-oh since late november, and I've been keeping her in a 10gal since I couldn't afford anything else at the time and she was relatively small. The plants are growing nicely (when she doesn't decide to rip them all out of the ground and chew on them) and there's a nice lawn of green algae starting to grow on the gravel. She's only about 2 inches long, including her tail, and she seems very healthy and alert. I love seeing really big fish, and I don't want to impact her health by stunting her growth in a small tank. But my mom is hesitant to let me buy a bigger one and I don't have much room for one, either, so unless I get one as a surprise birthday gift, I'm most likely not getting much of an upgrade soon. So how long can she stay in her 10gal, and are there any affordable upgrades I can get that can fit on a 4 foot-long dresser?

What filter is best for 45 gallon tank with two moderately large, fancy goldfish?

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 06:13 PM PDT

I noticed as my goldfish are growing larger, my sponge filter is becoming less and less effective as my ammonia has slowly risen up to 2.5. What filter should I replace it with? Please respond asap, I just want to keep my fish healthy and happy

Goldfish with severe cotton wool fungus?

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 05:34 PM PDT

We've had this little guy for a couple of years in a pond in the garden but a few days ago we noticed he has quite a lot of cotton wool like growths on him.

We moved him into a hospital tank asap and have been trying to treat him with anti-fungal medication we got from the pet shop but it doesn't seem to be slowing down the progression. We also added some aquarium salt today in the hopes that would work but we've seen nothing yet.

Is there any other way of treating this? I'm quite concerned at this point that if the fungus reaches his gills then it's going to to be all over. Does anyone have anything I should be looking for to know when "it's time"?

I have an honest question.

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 01:27 PM PDT

Disclaimer: this is not meant to push Any kind of lifestyle/agenda I am curious.

Of the people who keep fish as pets, do you eat fish? Like sushi, or cooked fish? Do you go fishing? Why or why not?

Feel free to remove if not allowed.

Is it safe to use primo water in my tank?

homemade tank decorations

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 03:37 PM PDT

Hi y'all, since I adopted my fish the day before shelter in place for my county, I only have the decorations that my friend had already bought for her fish. Since I am bored in my house, and i am sure my dear vincent is bored in his tank, do you think it would be possible to make tank decor out of polymer clay or something like that?

I want him to be entertained in his tank, I just don't want the clay to be harmful in any way.

If you have any insight or alternate ideas, please let me know :)

Moving with slim bodies

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 11:31 AM PDT

I have one comet and one common goldfish currently housed in a 29 gallon together. I'm moving in a few months, and will have a 40 gallon in addition to the 29 I have now. It's about a 3.5 hour move. My current plan is to add extra filter media to the tank they are in now to try to build enough beneficial bacteria to split the media between the 2 tanks, and transport all of the water that's in the 29 and split it between the two as well. Is 3.5 hours too long for them to be in 5 gallon buckets without extra aeration? What about their plants? What else should I do? I've never moved with fish!

moved fish into new tank, odd behavior?

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 07:19 AM PDT

i just moved bob into the new tank, he was eating all the food and the other fish wasn't getting any so i thought i needed to. the water parameters were pretty much the same so i just put him in with some of the original tank water in a cup.

he's moving around and nipping at the air bubbles on the side of the tank really quickly, sort of swimming aggressively along the walls, is this just normal behavior?

+i know i should cycle the new tank, but i got the fish unprepared and i don't think the smaller original tank is even developing the right beneficial bacteria at all. i figured it would be pretty much the same conditions, but with lower ammonia levels.

i'm very new to all this and trying to do the best i can under my circumstances. i'd appreciate any kinds of advice.

I cannot get my tank to start it's cycle!

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 08:57 AM PDT

So I have a 40 gal I set up 2 weeks ago. I'm doing a fishless cycle using old fish food.

I've been using this site as a guide: https://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles_51/fishless-cycling-article.htm

I've been doing water tests (using API kit with the drops) and my ammonia has only gotten to 1.0 ppm. My nitrites and nitrates are still at 0 after 2 weeks.

I've added SO MUCH FOOD to this tank, since the the guide says to add more food if your ammonia is under 3 ppm.

Tracking down pure ammonia will be difficult right now. Do I just need to give it more time? I know a full cycle can take a month+ but I was hoping I would have some nitrite by now, or at least more ammonia. Any suggestions?

Possible tankmates?

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 11:31 AM PDT

I'm very new to keeping fish myself and have kind of taken over the family tank. We have a small pleco and a small fancy goldfish. The pleco has been around for about 8 years now while this goldfish has been around for about a year. I was wondering if there was any room to possibly add some new friends into our 25 gallon tank. I've heard that goldfish can grow fairly large depending on the size of your tank however ours has remained fairly small since we got it. What fish are compatible and/or would I be over stocking the tank by adding more fish? Edit: measured tank and it's about 25 gallons filled volume
