Posted: 08 Apr 2020 08:42 PM PDT Came home from work. Went to go look at all of my water bugs. Looked at momma cray. She is shy an a nice dark blue. I turn to my left an look at citizen snips. He comes to the glass with his claws up rdy to swash buckle. Spinning around i look into my baby cray tank. So adorable to see them all running around zooming here an there. I swung around to nids tank. He isnt home. Panic almost tanks me as i look along the table to see if hes poking his head out. I find him in a clothes basket. I go to pick him up an he doesnt really fight it. Just lets me pick him up to put him back as if say plz put me back in the tank [link] [comments] | ||
A few days my crayfish died, and I'd like a question answered. Posted: 08 Apr 2020 06:20 PM PDT First of all, I wanna be clear that I was definitely NOT the best owner, and I am somewhat ashamed of it. I did not know what I was getting into, the crayfish was given to me after it ate all the fish in its previous home and was destined to be flushed by an acquaintance. I had him for seven months and he never seemed to have issues until... well he's dead. I got most of my 'advice' from a guy working at a fish shop near my town. He also did my water testing, so i don't know specifics, just that he told me my water was "very good" and my ammonia/nitrates/nitrites were all in good range with weekly 25% water changes. Jean Pierre (the crayfish) was fed pellets from the pet store that are 'formulated for aquatic crabs, crayfish and shrimp', along with occasional raw shrimps and a hunk of boiled egg yolk. (He also ate like four marimo moss balls. I guess he liked salad?) I admit, he did not get specialized care like he deserved. I'd use the excuse that I am a depressed mess of a human and I DID try to find an aquarium having person to give him a better home, but no one wanted him except me. Well, a couple days ago, I found him floating at the top of his tank. He had been alive the day before and I had added some water to his tank (our local water is straight from a well, no chlorine or additives and several neighbors on the same source use it unconditioned, I did the same for the last 7 months he was with me.) I scooped him out and checked him over, but he was gone. No behavior at all and missing one of his big legs (with claw) in front. I assumed (and still do) that I failed him somehow and buried him under my rose bush. I admit, I couldn't face his tank for a few days, so I turned off the pump and left it. Today I took it all apart and drained it... and I found his missing leg. Actually I found what I thought was another freaking crayfish, but turned out to just me a shed tail skin and a front 'half' (didn't seem to include the abdomen area, just the first body segment, the head and his missing leg all attached). It did not smell rotted or anything, and felt like the other times he shed in my tank, just... more substantial. It was in his hidey spot, but I'm 80% sure it wasn't in there the last time I saw him alive. So... he shed his skin and it killed him? I googled this but am mostly seeing that he could have lost a claw if he was startled while shedding, but his tank was in a peaceful room with no other animals to disturb him. How at fault am I for his death? And don't worry, I don't think I'm getting another crayfish, or any kind of fish, for a very long time. I'm sick with guilt over this. I know it sounds stupid, but I really did care about him. He was such a funny little guy. (I won't start telling crazy stories about his antics or anything, promise.) ETA: Because I got some info, he had been in his old home for over a year when I got him, and there is no actual proof "he" was a he. Its just what his old owner 'thought' he was. Why is my crayfish stroking itself? Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:17 PM PDT It looks like it's cleaning, but it's been doing it for over a week. It's not eating as voraciously so I'm expecting it to shed soon, but I'd like to know what the weird leg movements are. At present, she looks like she's shaving her legs. She's standing up taller than usual and kind of prancing about slowly then stopping and scratching itself all over, but mainly on her legs and pincers. Why do they do this? Is it a cleaning mechanism or something else, such as loosening the exoskeleton? [link] [comments] |
