Axolotl - Aquariums - My little dude! I haven't thought up a name yet. Just wanted to show him off a little I guess... . Was also wondering if he looks healthy or not? I tend to freak out about every little thing that changes so I thought I'd ask around.

Monday Axolotl photo...enjoy everyone :) (Don't worry, he lives in a large pond and sometimes comes out at night. Does not live in that tiny container. Was trying to determine sex, but he/she was stressed, and so was I.)

Setting Up a New Tank

Posted: 20 Apr 2020 09:59 AM PDT

Hi guys!

I'm relatively new to axolotl keeping (and to reddit) and I was looking for some advice on setting up a new tank for my guys. I currently have two (one male and one female, both about 2 years old) and just got a 40 gallon breeder for them. My sponge filter is currently on order, and I have a aqua clear filter rated for 30 gallons (hence why I got the sponge filter) along with caribsea sand as a substrate.

Would anyone have any suggestions on other things such as plants and lights to get, or any advice on starting and maintaining the aquarium?

Reputable places?

Posted: 20 Apr 2020 09:01 AM PDT

Hey friends I've been doing my research and looking for a local place that carries axos but not really finding any. Are they something that can be bought online and be okay? Any experience/sources to recommend?

Newbie, don’t own one... yet..

So I've been looking at to get an axolotl for quite some time, it think they're so cute and I just love caring for weird and new creatures. What size tank do you recommend? Id just be getting one but if I wanted two what would that be as well? Do they live better in pairs or alone, does it not matter? How often do you feed and what amount, what do you feed? What is safe to put in the tank, substrates, rocks, what kind of plants are safe? What temperature does the tank need to be held at? Do I need a filter at all or can I go filterless? How often do I change water, and what ph and salt level is best? Sorry for all of the questions! I just like to know every possible thing before owning an animal as I strive to give them the best care possible. If you have any other tips, tricks, or things to watch out for I'd love to get all the info I can! TYSM!

Fml my other axolotl just died

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 03:35 PM PDT

I posted here a few days ago about my axolotl having problems so I isolated her, I noticed my other axolotl was acting weird so I isolated him too and gave him new water, he was floating a lot and then their gills turned brown and today they were white, I tried to do everything I could to save him :( I suspect the water was too acidic, so by removing my other axie earlier I saved her (she is doing a lot better) I changed my filter about 2 months ago

Bye my love, about 6 years with him

Aging in Axies?

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 03:36 PM PDT

Hey! I'm on my first axie and I have a quick question for the more experienced users out there. Is it normal for axie gills to lose their fluffiness as they get older? I brought my girl home with really bright red, fluffy gills and now that she's older (about 8 months) she doesn't move around as much as she used to, so her gills are more pale, but they're also not as fluffy. I religiously change the water weekly with 25% changes and I closely monitor the water parameters. Everything has always checked out fine, so is she just getting older?

Advice for moving to hotter climate

Posted: 19 Apr 2020 02:02 PM PDT

Hi all! I have a 1 1/2 year old axie and I will be moving to a much warmer climate with 100°+ outdoor summer temps, in the coming week. This is temporary, but unfortunately there is nothing I can do about it because of the current circumstances.

I fully intend to keep my axie as comfortable as possible during this time by keeping ac on, using a fan over the water, and frozen water bottles if necessary.

I'm posting this to seek advice from others that also live in hot summer weather, to see if there are other tips or tricks I can utilize or warning signs that something is wrong with my axie to look out for.

Anything helpful is much appreciated, thank you!
