Axie with a broken arm?

Axie with a broken arm?

Hey guys! I just got my first axie the other day and iv'e noticed he doesn't use his arm at all/can't bend it downward. I'm really not sure what to do about it and I would love some advice. I'm thinking about taking him to the vet but I don't know any that have experience with axolotls. Is it possible they could amputate so it would grow back healthy? I don't really want to put him through something so traumatic but i'm worried he's in pain. Thanks!

Confused about fungus on gills

Posted: 11 Apr 2020 09:09 AM PDT

Hello r/axolotls!

So I've had my axolotl Orville for about three months and I've been battling a fungus issue ever l since I got him. Every once in a while, I'll notice a little tuft the fungus on him, and I will isolate and tub him until it goes away. This has happened three times now. I don't salt bath or tea bath (yet); I just do 100% water changes while tubbing, until he looks better.

His tank is a 20L with a 40 gallon sponge filter and sand substrate. I have it naturally planted (javas, anubias, moss balls) with a few driftwood and pot hides. I can provide pictures if someone wants. It only gets natural light and I test the water parameters frequently (like every other day) and all is good there— I get .00 on nitrite and ammonia. His water never gets above 68°F. I do a 40-70% water changes at least once or twice a week, sometimes more. Never enough to crash the cycle though. I'm very careful with that.

I have less than 10 cleaner shrimp (not sure how many he ate) in this tank that help with cleanup and provide little snacks. His diet used to be only earthworms, but with the quarantine I'm out of earthworms and I've been giving him axolotl pellets. I also have copepods, detritus worms, and hydra in the tank. I do spot clean with a turkey baster whenever I see any leftover pellets or little poops. Even when he was just getting earthworms and there were no pellets, I still was battling detritus worms (in my mind how can I over feed when he eats the whole worm?!). I try to keep it as clean as possible, but I'm fighting the microorganisms for sure.

My question is what could else be causing this fungus? It's your quintessential fungus on axolotl gills—little cotton balls that just appear on his gills. I don't know what else to do. I feel like I've checked all the boxes on cleanup, so how else do I make the tank cleaner (also tips on getting rid of the worms would be great—some aquarium enthusiasts say they are good, but I don't know about that)? I don't handle him at all (other than to put him in tubs, so I don't know what else is stressing him enough to cause fungus.

Also any tips on a tea bath? I'm not into the idea of salt baths, but a tea bath is my next step. Can I use tea in the whole tank, or just while tubbing? Also I have orange pekoe tea, which is technically a black tea. Would that work?

Considering crossposting to r/aquariums as well, but you guys are the experts!

Edit: added a photo of tank (it usually has wire lid but I'm about to do water changes)

Could you use reptile carpet for a substrate?

Posted: 11 Apr 2020 12:35 AM PDT

Hey there, I'm researching and planning on getting an axolotl and I'm trying to figure out what substrate would be best for me and my future axol. The only thing I'm worried about is chemicals, but I figured I would soak it and dechlorinate it before putting it into the tank. I'm wondering for anyone who is more seasoned could help me out! Btw I'm 21 and this will be my first tank. Thanks!
