I forgot to introduce my new little fella!!! His name is raccoon and he’s a golden albino as you can see! I feel as if he’s the perfect example for goldies because of how vibrant he is!

Please help! Axolotl throwing up food and little white worms :(

Posted: 23 Apr 2020 11:01 AM PDT

About an hour ago my 1 year old axolotl Bowser threw up the two pellets that I gave him as a treat yesterday along with around 10 wiggling little white worms. We only feed him either sinking shrimp pellets and nightcrawlers from PetSmart every other day. My dad suspects it was the worms since I just got 12 new ones but he hasn't been fed a nightcrawler in about a week since I was at my moms and my dad only feeds him pellets. I've never seen the worms in his tank before so idk if they are detritus worms or how they got in his food or his stomach. We just did a thorough water change including cleaning the sponge filter in removed tank water. I don't see anymore white worms. He seems to be okay now but he did gag a few times after throwing up. What are these white worms and where did they come from? I just don't want this to happen again to my boy. :(

ammonia spike?

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 03:39 PM PDT

hi, i'm new to the axolotl community in general, but i have a 3 or 4 month old juvenile lucy that i've been taking care of for a couple months now. as of yesterday, the ammonia has spiked and i've been freaking tf out about what to do with both the axie and the tank. i've been researching how to fix ammonia spikes for a while, and nothing seems to have a definitive answer as to what i need to do.

the ammonia is currently at around .5 ppm, and earlier today it was at 1 ppm, so it is going down. the nitrites and nitrates are both at 0 ppm. what should i do to lower the ammonia to a safe level?

some info:

  • the axie (his name is sir david the squishy) has been moved to his quarantine tub with cold, clean water, placed in the kitchen where it's cool, and covered with a small towel to keep it dark.
  • i cycled the tank for about 4 weeks before i got david, and it was at 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrites, and 0-2-ish ppm nitrates.
  • the water where i live is very soft, so i add a modified holtfelter's solution to the water to keep it high for the axie, so the hardness is around 150 generally.
  • the pH is usually a little on the higher side, but it usually caps out around 7.4-7.5 ish. i've read that that's alright for axies, is it?

this might seem a bit overdramatic, but i'm new to owning these guys and i just wanna make sure i'm giving him the best care possible. thanks!
