Juvenile Axolotl eating sand

Posted: 21 Apr 2020 07:53 AM PDT

Hello, I purchased my first axolotl yesterday. It is a juvenile and is three inches long. I've noticed him eating quite a bit of sand from the bottom of its aquarium. Is this normal? Would it be a good idea to remove the sand from his tank?

Help! Axolotl dark red, refusing food

Posted: 20 Apr 2020 09:55 PM PDT

Hi all,

Our 5 year old Azula (a leucistic) has been in bad shape for a couple of weeks and no matter what we do only gets worse. We changed her tank location and cleaned out her tank thoroughly about a month ago. A couple of weeks ago we noticed her going up for air several times an hour (like, 10-15, much more than usual) so we started doing 20% water changes daily thinking it might be nitrates. No improvement. We got a test kit and found that the water from our bathtub is hard water and the water from the sink we used to fill her tank with is not as hard, so we switched the water source back to the sink. No improvement. We added a bubbler to her tank. No improvement. Tests show nitrates/nitrites are 0, pH around 6.9, and temp around 60 F. Over the past few days, her skin has been getting progressively more and more red and she's been refusing food. We usually feed her night crawlers and have tried raw chicken to see if she would eat that. We're trying isolating her in a separate container tonight, but can't find any explanations as to what could be wrong with her! Please help! Images available in the comments.

Huge Ammonia Accident

Posted: 20 Apr 2020 04:50 PM PDT

So I have been cycling my planted lotl' tank for a while while preparing to accept a few lotl' into my life. After a few days of having a new Axlotl my nitrites started to go up a fair b it, but my ammonia wasn't going anywhere. No nitrates. I had noticed this axlotl was being a picky eater, so i started to worry that the tank cycle was going wonky. As the lotl' i was rehoming was a sick mel, i had some fears he just wasn't pooping enough to actually sate the bacteria in the tank.

So i started with water changes. I have a nerve disorder, so my husband was being nice enough to help me as i tried to correct the cycle. While I was priming a bucket of water, i told him to put in a little splash of ammonia. I should have said 'a half a capfull.' I come in to see him dunk a half a cup of ammonia into my 20 gallon tank. I forgot that he really doesn't understand the hobby, but has been doing his damndest to try. So i tried not to freak out so i didn't accidentally upset the dude too much. I discreetly did a half change that night.

In the morning i see the nitrites and nitrates are OFF THE FRIGGING CHARTS so my life has been massive gravel vac'ing and water changes as i try to get things rectified without crashing the tank. The plants are loving this shit, but I'm sitting here hating myself for having a canister filter. Trying not to kill all my bacteria while fixing this situation has been a real bummer. I've cycled over a dozen tanks and have never had this sort of trouble before. Now my new axlotl has gone right into tubs with daily water changes instead of his new home.

TL:DR Always specify exactly how much of something you want to have someone put into your tank. Or better yet, always do it yourself. So at least then it'll be your problem.

Our tank just became gross.

My daughter has two axolotls. I bought her two for her class pet. They did great and the kids took very good care of them and the tank was always clear and perfect. The quarantine came around and we took them home. Once home, I was taking care of them on nights my daughter was at her mother's house. I let the water get too warm and found them floating. Ok, my bad.

I bought two more and they were doing well for about a week. I turned the filter off maaaaaaybe 48 hours. Next thing we know the water is hazy and there is definitely a slime over the glass and everything in the aquarium. I don't want to kill another pair of water dragons. They are healthy, it seems, for now. They eat and are playful and swimming well.

My filter has subsequently died (I just bought the thing about 6 months ago!) so I am relying on water changes for now until I can exchange it. I also have a fan on the water to keep it cool because I haven't had time to get a cooler installed. Is there something I can do or something I need to add to clear up this murky swamp I've got going on? Is the fan making it go slimy? The aquarium is in a pretty dark corner as well. Could this be algae growing because there is never any direct sunlight?

Thanks for any help in advance.
