Aoki, my oldest mystery, grumpy about his monthly she’ll check

I got BobJim the mystery snail only two months ago and he's already more than doubled in size! The red arrow shows where the edge of his shell was when I got him. Is it normal for mystery snails to grow so fast? I've had mystery snails before, none have ever grown as rapidly as this guy.

Ramshorn Snails suddenly in distress. I think they're dying but cannot figure out why.

Posted: 05 Apr 2020 02:51 PM PDT

I have a 1.5 gallon with 1 adult ramshorn and two young ramshorns. I hunt down and remove egg sacs every week to control the population lol. (The two little ones came about when I was on vacation and I had no idea the adult had started laying). I've had the adult in the tank for six months. I recently moved, and with the last water change (the second water change since I moved) suddenly the snails all stopped clinging and they've retracted into their shells.

I tested the water before I moved, it's not different except for my water now has 5-10ppm nitrates in it straight from the faucet. Current tank parameters are:

PH: 7.6, Ammonia: 0ppm, Nitrites: 0ppm, Nitrates 5ppm. Temp stays between 68 and 70. One little internal filter with some filter sponge. Three LED lights that run 8-10 hours depending on when I remember to turn it off. The tap water has a GH of 15, KH of 10.

The tank has always had a sand substrate, one piece of wood, one rock, java moss, java ferns, and a crypt. Nothing has been added to the tank, with the exception of swapping one part (there are several pieces of sponge, I swapped out the carbon filter that came with the filter for a filter pad, but left three of the pieces of sponge in the filter to help prevent loss of bacteria) of the filter media with the last change. I don't think this was the problem because the behavior was INSTANT after the water change. I vaccuumed the surface of the sand and replaced half the water with tap treated with prime, the temperature of the water was the same, and I let it sit about five minutes before putting it in to let the prime do it's thing. I haven't added anything new to my routine.

So like I said, immediately after I replaced the water, the three snails sort of...crawled around for a sec, but not with any sense of purpose. It's like they were having a hard time clinging and navigating? They'd like reach up like they were trying to climb UP something, but there was nothing there, and they'd sit like that for a minute, then retract into the shell and quit clinging and roll over. They periodically move a tiny bit, but immediately quit clinging once they stop, retract completely into the shell, and then slump over on their side. Also when I woke up this morning (day after the water change) I noticed the water was slightly cloudy. I checked AGAIN wondering if the cycle crashed with the removal of the old carbon filter but I still have 0ppm ammonia, nitrites, and only 5ppm nitrates. I'll keep an eye on the water for ammonia spikes but....I dunno right now.

So....I'm at a loss. Obviously something in the water, but what?! The ONLY different in water is the addition of 5-10 ppm of nitrates straight from the tap. PH is the same, no ammonia, no nitrites. I checked the water quality report for Feb 2020 from the water company and it doesn't seem like anything is too alarming...I'll link it below.

https://www.valleywater.org/your-water/water-quality/water-quality-reports (Just scroll down for Feb 2020, it's a .pdf)

I don't even know what to try because I don't know what the problem is. Completely drain the tank and refill? I have some purified drinking water, but there will be a big difference in water hardness if I just drain and refill with that. I don't wanna sit around for the next couple days and watch the little dudes die. Wtf could have happened with .5 gallons of water during a change that would instantly distress and start to kill three otherwise happy healthy snails?

Floating Snail

Posted: 05 Apr 2020 06:24 PM PDT

Hello all!

Sorry for the formatting, I'm on mobile

My snail, Alfa (freshwater mystery), has been clamped up and floating for roughly 4 days. I'm not sure if this is normal behavior, as I'm a new snail mom.

He has a buddy, Clint, who is also a mystery and has been active and seemingly normal

They have enough algae and I pulverize egg shells for them about once weekly, so I'm not sure if it's something dietary?

I also add water to their tank (with an application of chlorine aid of course) because the water tends to evaporate because it's near a window

Should I be concerned about how long he's been floating? If so, what do you think it may be? Is there anything I can do? I love him very much and it would devastate me if he died, especially if it was my fault.

Thank you for your replies ((:

Looking for Zebra Nerite snails - Scotland (UK)

Posted: 05 Apr 2020 12:18 PM PDT

Hello, I'm based in Scotland (UK).

My planted tank has been cycled for just over a week but I cannot stock it through shops or online sellers (that I know of) due to Covid-19. I am looking for up to 2x Nerite snails. Is anyone willing to gift or sell me some within Scotland? I will pay for shipping.

Thank you in advance for your help!
