My Little Fish Buddy Isn’t Doing Well

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 03:14 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I posted a while back about my buddy Poe being stressed about his new tank. He was fine the next morning!

I did a water change (about 50%) Saturday and rinsed a little bit of algae off of the decorations with the dirty water from the tank. No filter change. Water parameters tested great.

I got home yesterday (Wednesday) and Poe is acting stressed. Lying on the bottom, not really swimming around. Water parameters last night were Nitrate: less than 20, Nitrite: 0, Total Hardness: 75, Total Alkalinity: between 40 and 80, and neutral pH.

I did a 50% water change and treated the entire tank with water dechlorinator that treats both chlorine and chloramine and promotes a healthy slime coat. After the water change he was acting much better.

This morning, he was swimming around, but a little more slowly than normal. I treated the water again and changed the filter.

He is still lying on the bottom and starting to look like he's gasping for air. Im planning on doing a 75% water change and retreating the water. I'm considering removing everything except his filter and air bubbler, including substrate, but I'm not sure if that would help. Interested his water and as of about 5 minutes ago, the parameters were Nitrate: less than 0, Nitrite: 0, Total Hardness 85, Total Alkalinity: between 0 and 40, neutral pH.

Is there anything else I can do? Besides lying on the bottom and starting to gasp, he is showing no other symptoms. He's about 4 years old, so he's not too old and he's usually very healthy and active.

I really want to make sure my buddy is OK. Thanks for the help everyone!!

What kind of companion for my disable ranchu?

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 11:26 AM PDT

So he died

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 06:58 PM PDT

My calico fantail died today... all of the other goldfish and the loaches in the tank are fine... they do have what looks like ich but we are treating that but that's not what killed the calico cuz we just got him a few days ago... but I'm going to test the water just to make sure... but I've had bad luck buying from pet stores... first the loaches I got gave my goldfish ich and now my calico died... I bought them from the same pet store so I think it something to do with that pet I but I'm looking In to breeders instead of buying from petco anymore

Goldfish can lose their color, but can they gain it back?

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 02:00 PM PDT

Have any of you had experience with goldfish gaining pigment back after losing it? I have one fish that I've had for about three years and when I first got him he was black orange and white, over the years his black faded and now he's orange and white.

Well he developed a black spot on his side and I contacted my vet about it and he suspects it could be natural pigment developing again, I've heard about this happening but I want to know if any of you have first hand experience with it or if it's just an internet myth.

I'm not trying to discredit what my vet said but I'm just overly paranoid especially when it comes to animal illnesses because they can't tell us what's wrong and I'm always worried I won't be able to figure it out on my own.

Central Florida Koi and Goldfish show this weekend!

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 10:43 AM PDT

Hey everyone, if you're in the Orlando area, the Central Florida Koi and Goldfish show are this weekend. They tend to have some amazing vendors and fish to see and buy.

This is probably going to be the first one in four years I'm not going to but I really recommend if you have the time to go on out and see the amazing fish. It's going from Friday to Sunday but I recommend going Saturday.

Both goldfish stayed in bottom the whole day when introduced into tank until I turned off aquarium light, they started swimming all over the place. I didn't planned to put light back till tomorrow. Anyone can find out the reason for this behaviour? It's 25 gallon tank with canister & sponge filter.

Bigger the better?

So I've been thinking about getting goldfish for a while now. I've heard that they do best with friends, so I want at least 2 or 3.

I haven't decided what type of goldfish I want, but I know I want some doubletails. As for the tank, how big should I make it?

I've watched videos and read online that you should do 40 gallons per goldfish. I'm leaning more towards getting only 2 goldfish for now because I've never owned them before and I feel getting 3 or more would put too much commitment on my end.

Since I want 2, that means I would need an 80 gallon tank, but would a bigger tank be good? Like maybe somewhere between an 85-100 gallon tank? Does a bigger tank mean it would be harder to clean? Also, would a bigger tank be too much for only 2 goldfish?
