Help- new goldfish acting lethargic Posted: 14 Mar 2020 12:08 AM PDT Hello! First off I would like to mention that I started the whole aquarium hobbie only a few months ago with experience from koi ponds so if I'm doing anything wrong please inform me... I have a 55gal tank with two orandas who are happy and healthy and the water has been recently changed and tested. Today I brought home a red cap oranda to give the two another friend. I did the process of letting the bag sit on the surface of the tank water and slowly adding more and more tank water into the bag to get the new red cap used to his new water. Finally when I released him, after he explored around his new environment I noticed he was acting a little lethargic compared to my first two orandas who are very active and always playfully swimming around. These two fish aren't bothered by him and they all seem to have peace with each other. It's been about 5 hours since I brought the red cap home and he still is acting that way, usually floating in a corner and staring at the wall. When he does swim around it's a lot slower paced than how my other orandas swim. Is this behavior normal for a new fish in a new environment and is he just being shy? Or should this be something to be concerned for? I have a separate tank with cycled water I could temporarily place him in, would that be necessary just in case he's sick or should I give it some more time? Thank you for any help!!! Planning a goldfish tank, advice needed! Posted: 13 Mar 2020 11:54 PM PDT So YEARS ago I had 5 goldfish in a 50 gallon tank, only for about 3 months as they grew out to populate a neighbor's pond. Now this last year I moved away from home, which means I can no longer visit my fish babies in my neighbor's pond. now as crazy as this might sound I miss them deeply, I got them from the feeder tank as they were the last 5 in a closing petsmart and I wanted to give them a chance. In those 3 months they helped me out of a deep depression and taught me a lot about responsibilities and growing up. (I was 17 at the time) after i gave them up to the pond life i started keeping a betta instead because they really got me into aquariums but goldfish still hold a special place in my heart. Now I want another goldfish tank, not anytime soon as I live in a 3rd story walkup and any tank big enough for goldfish is too big for me to carry up 3 flights of stairs. But in half a year I'll be more financially stable and living in a first floor apartment, so I'd like to get one then. My SO is limiting me to 60 gallons max tank size tho, with a 40 gallon preferred. I already know both are too small for my beloved comets but I -think- a single or maybe even 2 fancies can live in a 40? Am I wrong on that? In that vein I'll be making the switch to fancies regardless, and I know they're a little clumsier and accident prone, but are there any huge differences in their tank set up and care between them and comets?
