Question: Why always leucys and mels together?

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 09:06 AM PDT

I always see leucistics and melanoids together. Is there an actual reason or benefit? Besides they're freaking cute together. I got 2 leucys, and now I'm worried I missed something.

i need help :)

i got my axolotl last year as a surprise present from my parents during a time when i was not fit to be caring for an aquatic pet, and i'm calling myself out on this post, something that i have been denying since i got my axolotl is that i'm an awful owner. i haven't taken good care of such a sweet and beautiful animal, he hasn't gotten the treatment he deserves. his tank is a mess cause i've been too depressed to clean it (i'm not making excuses, i'm a horrible person, i'm aware) and i feel like i've let him down. he's got algae and what not on his back. his tank is filthy. and it needs to change. he doesn't deserve to suffer like this any longer. and i'm asking you guys to help me, i need all the tips and information i can get. i know i could just research it but i want to hear it from people who are experienced. please, if you have the time, i'd appreciate even the smallest tip. thank you :)

Axie keeps spitting out food?

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 06:37 AM PDT

I got my juvie (3 months old-ish) axolotl in late January 2020, and he used to eat pellets fine. Then we found a source of live red worms, so we tried feeding him those and he seemed to like them for a bit (although he was passing them almost undigested, which was a problem of its own).

Then he wouldn't eat the red worms anymore, so we tried live earthworms and thawed bloodworms, and he wouldn't eat either- even in his small tub with the bloodworms he just tried to suck them down and then spit them right back out.

My latest experiment has been taking a whole earthworm, blanching it (so it would be dead and not wriggly), cutting off just the tip, and feeding it to him. Same result: he snaps it up, moves it around in his mouth a bit, and spits it back out.

He hasn't eaten properly in around a week, which really worries me. Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts?

Tank setup: 20 US gallons, with black fine sand on bottom, tank temp 62-63 F (as low as 59 and as high as 65, but gradually throughout the course of the day, as heat shifts). Ammonia 0.25 ppm, nitrite 1(ish) ppm, nitrate 5 ppm, pH about 8.2 (which I know is high; I've been looking into peat moss to help lower it, but haven't found any good ones on Amazon.)

Axolotl temp

Posted: 11 Mar 2020 10:50 PM PDT

I live in Dallas TX and it gets hot. I have a double fan constantly on, but my temp is still above 63 degrees F. What else can I do to prevent temperature rise?

Blackwater Axolotl Tank?

Posted: 11 Mar 2020 11:40 PM PDT

Because of something someone brought up in the comments of one of my posts, I am now wondering if I can make a blackwater tank for my axolotl, axol. Is this possible and healthy for Axol? And how would I be able to do this?

How long should I do daily salt baths after seeing fungus?

Posted: 11 Mar 2020 10:37 PM PDT

I noticed yesterday that one of my axolotls, Jelly, had a white spot on her gill; today I realized it had grown and was fungus (her water is at about 65 degrees Fahrenheit). I gave her a salt bath for 15 minutes tonight and gently pulled off the clump from her gill.

If I don't see anymore visibly fungus, how long should I continue salt baths to be safe?
