*Possible Emergency* Axolotl Help

Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:15 AM PST

I am caring for my roommates' axolotls while they are on a trip. While I was feeding one, my hand dipped into the water unexpectedly. I wasn't paying attention or thinking and it ended up in there for as long as ten second or so.

I had not rinsed nor washed my hands yet after waking up, but it was the last thing I did before going to sleep last night. I had also handdled my phone and there could be any number of things on it just from daily handling.

I know axolotls are very sensitive and delicate. Should I be worried about contamination of the tank (~20-25 gallon) with either soap residue, my body oils, or anything else that may have been on my skin? If the axolotl begins acting strangely, how should I proceed?

How to keep an axie without a cycled tank?

Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:10 PM PST

Hey! I just got an axolotl a little while ago, but it came as a package deal with a 20 gallon tank and a bunch of supplies, so the tank was super new when we got him. I want to cycle the tank, and I know it's not good to cycle with him in there, but I don't know where to put him in the meantime. I've heard about binning axolotls, and I would be willing to do that, but I just don't know where to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Going on Vacations, need advice

Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:08 PM PST

so, me and my family are going on vacation and im not sure of what to do with my axie. Ill be out for 4 days.

Ive been planning on buying an automatic feeder, and a second fan (Already got one, but generally doesnt make to the optimal temperature, so i use ice bottles). And of course i will let her without any light that can bother her.

Is it safe if i left her like that? how safe is it to left her with the top of the aquarium off? is it okay to use an automatic feeder? will 2 fans be enough? im really nervous about her.

If it helps, she is about 4 years old, and she eats about 3-4 times a week. The temperature where i live is usually 86 F (30 C), but with just one fan i can make it to 68-70.

Is my lotl sick?

Posted: 03 Feb 2020 12:43 AM PST

I got my axolotl Frida just over two weeks ago, and she's been doing well, but since yesterday morning she's really not been acting herself. She only moved when I fed her (she's normally really active), otherwise she lies in the same spot for hours at a time. She's still eating but with a bit less enthusiasm, I don't think she's snapping as hard. She also keeps flicking her gills, every five seconds or so, all day. The biggest change that happened was I added two live plants to her tank the day before. I've taken them out, but there's been no improvement overnight. There's no visible signs of fungus or peeling or redness. Can anybody help?

Question

Posted: 02 Feb 2020 09:29 AM PST

Can a male axolotl mistake another male for a female, I have had 2 male axolotls (at least I thought I did) for over a year now, and one of them got sick. I put him in a different tank for a while, and he/she got better pretty quickly. When I put him/her in the other tank with the male, they went nuts and the male was spewing sperm things all over the place for the other one. The other one had all of the traits of a male (skinny, bigger cloaca, etc), but is it possible that either A. It was mistaken as a female, or B. It has been a female all along?
