Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:13 AM PST Hi everyone! ! I read about this online but I didn't quite what it was, so I was hoping that one of you could explain it to me. I really wanna get an a axolotl, but I want to understand everything that my pet will need once I get it. If there are other things that you find important to mention please feel free to add them below as well. And please explain what tank cycling is. Thank you all in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Feb 2020 04:59 AM PST Guide for baby axolotls. Deciding on your axolotl: Get one with legs and arms fully developed. It's too risky to buy one before that, they could still die easily. Setting up your tank: Tub: -Some people keep the young ones in a tub with water just enough to cover the animal. This makes for easy feeding and cleaning. -Change the water twice daily. Aquarium: -Cycle your tank. -Use a sponge filter. Axolotls don't like waterflow, it stresses them. -Provide places to hide and use a low light source. -Use Sand or nothing at all for the bottom. They try to eat everything that fits in their mouth because they don't see well. Gravel can't get digested and gets stuck or hurts the animal while passing through. -Fill the water up about a third. It makes for easier cleaning and feeding. Water requirements: -Keep the temperature between 60° F and 70° F. High temperatures mean fast metabolism which will eventually kill the animal. You can achieve that by leaving the tank uncovered, getting low heat lights, getting a chiller or aquarium fans. -Treat the tap water or let it sit for a few days to get rid of the chlorine. -Make sure the Ph is 6.5 to 8, medium-hard water. Tankmates: -Axolotls are prone to cannibalism because of their poor eyesight. -In nature they are solitary animals anyway, meaning they live alone. -Fish are good for hunting in later stages but can pose a threat to the animal because of its soft skin that can get easily hurt. Moreover they can bring bacteria and fungi with them that can hurt the axolotl. Feeding: -Axolotls can be very picky with their food, don't loose patience and try out what suits you best. -Don't use pellets until they are around 10cm. -Feed small live food like daphnia, brine shrimp, blood worms. -Drain the water of the package before feeding. It's dirty. For storage keep it in fresh water in the fridge. -You can breed live food yourself or buy it. -For Bloodworms and brine shrimp I take my small axolotl out the tank once a day and put him in a small tub with aquarium water. This way it can find the food easily and the food doesn't die and decompose in the aquarium. -Daphnia I put in the aquarium. They feed off algae and live for a few weeks if they don't get eaten. They come packaged in such an amount that it's easy for the axoltol to find them itself in the aquarium. -Be prepared to buy new life food once or twice a week. Have fun with your new friend :) [link] [comments]

I am a complete idiot and am in dire need of help! Posted: 14 Feb 2020 08:14 PM PST I did a bunch of research and somehow missed everything about tank cycling?!?! I'm extremely worried about my little axolotl. I did even more research and know what I have to do. The problem is I don't know where to put my lil guy while I get the tank cycled. The most info I could find said to put them in a tub and do a 100% water replacement everyday. [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Feb 2020 11:06 AM PST Can someone describe to me (like I'm 5) how to cycle a tank? I've never done it before and I'm planning to get an axolotl in a couple of months. Never had anything more than a beta in a tank before. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Feb 2020 02:39 PM PST My friend knows someone who's axolotls had babies and is giving them away. I'm moving and already asked my housemate if I could get one, they said yes. I know I'd need a 15 - 20 gallon tank, a siphon, a water filter, a thermostat thing to make sure it's cool enough, spring water (doesn't have chemicals as far as I know), and id probably get some water plants and cherry shrimp or ghost shrimp for snacks/company, the bloodworm cubes for diet or even the frozen fish pellets, and a little cubby to hide in and sleep in, so none of that seems like too much. However, I don't really know anything about them honestly beyond cute videos and basic research and not sure what to expect. I'd only get one as I don't want to end up with more. I'm stressed about committing to an animal for 15 years since I'm 20, and not sure about my life situation. I also do petsitting as a job and I'm gone pretty often, in May I'll be gone an entire month (this isn't a common occurrence) but my housemate could feed them but I'm not sure about changing the water and things like that. I don't want to rely on other people because this is a life and doesn't deserve to suffer because I couldn't make sure they would be adequately taken care of. But I have also heard they are very hardy and would be alright. I really badly want one! And not sure how much longer I'll be housesitting and things anyways. Please let me know your experience with them and if they are very demanding of time and resources. And if you know of any cute pink things I could put in a tank that's safe for them (if I do get one). TLDR; not sure if I can handle getting one because of travel but want to make it work, what's your experience with them, cute things for the tank Thanks. [link] [comments] |
