First ramshorn babies!

Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:23 AM PST

So my single free petsmart ramshorn, Their Majesty Snailsworth II 's first laid eggs less than 24 hours after being placed in my tank Feb 17. It laid several other clutches. It seemed to lay every time I did a 50% water change.

Yesterday I did a 75% change. During that i scraped off all the other clutches except the first. Surely right after the change, it laid a new rather long clutch on one of my hygros, why so big? Was it the giant spinach meal you had the other day that you wouldn't let go of for hours? Maybe.

Anyway came to check the tank before leaving work and then first clutch split into 2! Then 3 and 4 and now I can see 3 new babies! I wonder what color they will be, right now they look yellow.

Is care the same with an adult?

Did part of her foot fall off? Is this a disease or could it have been just an injury?

Questions

I have a few snail questions.

  1. Where do you get healthy snails? Looking for active snails without much shell damage. (Specifically magenta/purple/blue/ivory mysteries, nerites, and Japanese Trapdoor or Rabbit snails. Not available or very expensive at my LFS.)
  2. Will Rabbit snails be alright in lower temperatures (70-72)? I've read a whole lot of contradicting information on this.
  3. Do other snails or fish eat nerite eggs? Not a huge problem, but I don't really want a ton of eggs on the front glass or on other snails.

unknown new snails in tank?

Posted: 26 Feb 2020 10:09 AM PST

a few week ago i set up a 2.5gal planted tank w some hornwort, java fern, and some other plants. while i was at the store i decided to grab a nerite snail as well (just him in there besides 2 mts if they're still alive and whatever these guys are). i've kept a pretty close eye on the tank since then but i spent a couple nights away from home and when i got back and looked this morning i saw a bunch of tiny snails all over the java and hornwort (i lost count after about a dozen or so).

based on what i've read online i don't think it's likely that the nerite alone would lay eggs that would survive (the tank is freshwater) but if they were bladder snails from the plants i thought i would have seen them by now (i've been looking for the 2 small trumpet snails). i also inspected the plants when i got them and didn't see any lil guys. they're not cone shaped so i don't think they'd be mts but i don't know if it would be possible for my nerite to have babies? or are they just 'pest' snails?

i'm definitely not upset and i'll upsize my tank accordingly if i need to i just a) don't know what kind of snails they are and b) don't know how long they'll take to reach their full size. any help would be appreciated as this is my first time keeping multiple snails in a planted tank. thanks:)
