Wife said I couldn't buy any new tanks this year. So I pulled an old one out of storage and filled it with leftover substrate and trimmings from other tanks. Blue dreams go in tomorrow!

My first set of skrimplets are all grown up and making more skrimps... with each other. How many generations before I have to worry about problems arising from that? Info in comments

I would love to raise baby green jade shrimps. Will they live a happy life among this substrate?

Adding shrimp to a planted half gallon vs a non planted 5.5 gallon w/ tankmates?

Posted: 09 Jan 2020 11:04 PM PST

So I've been wanting some blue velvets and theyre on sale right now so I was considering ordering some. I have a 5.5 gallon already with 3 platys as well as an empty half gallon. I'm only planning on getting just 2 or 3 shrimp, but wanted some more experienced people's opinions.

Option 1: Planted half gallon tank with only shrimp in it. Kinda small and the website says a minimum of 5 gallons, but I feel like that its enough for just 2/3? And I know I might get more if they breed but I'm not really concerned with it at the moment. I have some quick start stuff if beneficial bacteria matter to shrimp, so a uncycled tank isn't a big deal. I can also just use water from my 5.5 gallon.

Option 2: Nonplanted 5.5 gallon with 3 platys and a filter. I'm kinda concerned that my platys might pick on the shrimp, especially depending on how small they arrive. If size is the only problem, I might keep them in the half gallon until theyre large enough for the 5.5 gallon. I'm also concerned the shrimp wont be happy with the flow in the tank (on top of 1/2 of the tank) or the plastic plants I have for cover, which are about 2 inches tall.

Option 3: Plant my 5.5 gallon and move everyone in but keep the filter. I could place everyone in the half gallon or bowls while I plant then add them back in.

I'm leaning towards option 2 if ya'll think the shrimp will be fine. I'll plant my 5.5 gallon eventually but don't want to while I'm just concerned about the shrimp surviving. Thanks for the help. :)

ETA: Here's a picture of my current tank
