Isn’t a terrarium, but I just thought I’d share this with you guys because it looks awesome.

This "sealed" jarrarium is an experiment just to see how many plants can survive in a jar this size and how deep I could make the soil. I've opened it three times to smell the air (for H2S), first sealed 2 months ago. It smells earthy, a good sign.

First attempt at a closed jarrarium that hasn't been opened since last decade (kill me)

Are there any books that you would recommend for me to read up on self-sustaining terrariums/jarraiums?

I'm interested in making one, but I want some more information about it before committing.

Quick Question Regarding Lighting for my first closed Ecosphere (details and pictures inside)

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 01:02 PM PST

Hello,

I just went out today to start my first enclosed ecosphere and I just want to make sure I have the lighting set up right and I am hoping this sub can help.

For context, I live in the Northeast of the US (New Jersey) and I collected the sediment and water from a small (very slow current) stream from the swamp nearby. the Jar is 2 litres and air sealed. Temperature in the room is in the low 70s but can get down to the mid 60s (F).

Anyways, I am keeping them in a room with very little natural lighting and so I purchased and LED light and attached it to a desk lamp (5000 k, 450 lumines).

In so far, I was curious regarding which of these three lighting positions would be best (I worry about heat) and if I use a lamp, how long I should keep it on for and if it should be directly focused on the jar.

  1. (See attached image) Imgur the light is a bit far away but it is directly on the jar. I am concerned that it will get too hot.

  2. Imgur the lamp is titled so it is not directly facing the jar. I do wonder if that is even too much.

  3. Imgur natural light conditions. Please note, that it is a cloudy day and late afternoon. I worry that it will fall as there isn't enough room and people go past it all of the time and that it will be slightly colder compared to the rest of the room so its not an ideal option for me.

Anyways, I am excited to see how this goes (even if I am starting in the winter) and any tips regarding lighting (and which option is preferable) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much!
