Best diet for smaller goldfish

Posted: 17 Jan 2020 10:59 PM PST

I'm newer to goldfish keeping. I have a 60 gallon with three goldfish - one larger fancy (still itty bitty but biggest in the tank at 4 inches), a 2 inch ryunkin and a 2 inch oranda. I'm currently feeding them small omega one gold fish pellets. What else can I add to enhance their diet?

Its a sad day in my tank today...

I lost one of my piggies overnight. I've had him for a year, and he was a personable fellow. And he was so pretty. Calico Butterfly Telescope. Sigh.

Quick question

Posted: 17 Jan 2020 10:04 PM PST

My goldfish always swim to the top of the tank when I come by with food. I'm worried this means I may not be feeding them well enough. I feed them a couple chunks of gel food that I made myself a day and sometimes interchange that with peas or let them try some fruits. They love raspberries but don't seem to like cucumber and kale as much as other Reddit's stated. They also will occasionally get bribe shrimp or some other kind of freeze dried fish food but less than once a month for this kind Bc it's super special. I have toyed with the idea of buying frozen food but am kind of terrified I'd receive a bacteria. Do you think they need to be fed more or are they just hungry little goldfish?

Fancy Goldfish Cold? Sleeping? Or dying? Transferred them from my 20 gallon into a 55 gallon. Poured the 20 gallon in here and dechlorinated it. Help please.

The most delightful fish I've ever had

Posted: 17 Jan 2020 02:52 AM PST

I've been so afraid I would kill my goldies in no time, especially since they were expensive goldies and I've never kept goldfish before.

But it's been 2 weeks and the little chunky butts are doing great! My house is cold so I have a heater set at 70°.... Which I had to replace in less than a week because the original one wasn't sealed and filled up with water and wasn't working. Thankfully Amazon makes returns easy!

I also bought the fancy Python siphon kit, thinking okay, water changes will be effortless! Nope. The attachments don't fit any of the faucets in my house. Outside spigots, yes, but I'm not giving them a 40° water change so tomorrow I'm looking for an adaptor after I finish their next water change.

I'm already planning out the final goldfish tank. Planning on picking up a 75 gallon when they're on sale at Petco in a couple months and I'll probably turn their current tank into another community tank.

These guys are so endearing and so fun to watch do their little fancy fish wiggles all over the tank! Whenever I feed them, I spend at least 15 minutes just watching them. I'm in school full time and will be for a couple more years, and they're such a wonderful diversion in my day.

The red mark around his eye has turned to this, growing out of skin and looks white and soft. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Exposed stomach advice

Posted: 17 Jan 2020 02:38 PM PST

I'm really hoping someone can give me some ideas here. Last week I saw one of my fish struggling a tiny bit when trying to turn around, he would lose balance for a second. I thought maybe it was the filter power so I played around with it and it seemed to go away. Then one morning he was completely on his back floating at the top, stomach exposed. I immediately moved him to a quarantine tank that had a much lower water level, and much less water movement and flow (a sponge filter. I put a heater in at a higher temp than the original tank, aquarium salt and gave him some peas then fasted him for 3 days. There was slight improvement sometimes, he was managing to stay down for longer when he tried to swim down. The first poop he did had some air bubbles in and after that he's been pooping a lot of normal poo. After the three day fast, I fed some more peas. It's been a couple more days and there has been slight improvement but nothing super amazing. Today there's a small red dot on his belly and I'm assuming it's because it's always exposed and it's getting sore. I've been through this once before a long time ago, the stomach started to rot and it was horrible. I want to give him some more time for swim bladder treatment but I absolutely do not want the stomach getting sore or ulcers.

Is there anything anyone knows of that can help keep him underwater? Even if he's upside down in the water, any device or secure mesh (that is stable enough he won't be able to wriggle up the sides of it and expose himself again or worse flip onto the top and suffocate), anything to just stop his stomach exposing to the air while I continue to try and improve him?

So sorry for the long post I'm just really hoping someone has been through similar and has a suggestion! I don't want to euthanise until I've tried to treat the bladder for a little while longer. Thank you!!

Advice please! My fantail lives with another fantail and a sucker fish, idk if it’s one of the others attacking him or something else making him ill? The patches on his sides are missing the scales, they’re bloody but not bleeding and he’s struggling to swim a little. What can I do to help him?

Advice: my kid's teacher has 3 comets in a 10gal!

Posted: 17 Jan 2020 12:39 PM PST

After our new blue oranda arrived in the mail today, my child told me her teacher has 3 common goldfish in a small aquarium. I have not seen this tank, so it must be a new thing since I was last in the classroom. My kid says the tank is just like the one in our garage which is a 10gal. If this is true, and the teacher has an undersized and overstocked tank, I doubt water changes are happening. Should I offer the teacher advice or even donate my spare tank and filter? I feel like even giving her the spare tank wouldn't help much long term. Should I mind my own business? Any advice would be appreciated!

How to put down a fish if you don't have the heart?

Posted: 17 Jan 2020 12:21 PM PST

I've had a goldfish for the past month who can barely swim. All he does is float at the top of the tank and just sit there. Every time we try to move him he flips back upside down and then sits at the top. We've tried everything for him ever since he started showing these symptoms. I heard clove oil is the best way to put a fish down. He's suffering and I just feel so bad for him. But I don't have the heart to do it. Any advice on this topic?

Breeding tubercles or Ich on Red Cap Oranda

Breeding tubercles or Ich on Red Cap Oranda

Hi, I am wondering if these are signs of Ich parasite or just breeding tubercles? The spots so far have only shown on the fishs' gills and top of both side fins. No other illness is to be observed.

The fish is swimming healthy, 1 fish in a 20 Gal, around 72 Deg F, slightly salted water

Nitrate 20 mg/L, Nitrite .5 mg/L, Hardness 75 GH, Chlorine 0, Alkalinity 40 KH, pH 6.8, Ammonia 0

1/15/20 when there were multiple dots on gills/top of fins on both sides

1/17/20 another photo of the white dot

1/17/2020, only noticeable white spot is the one prominent white dot on right fin, no more spots on the gills though.

Got them 1 week ago. Tank was cycled before buying. Ammonia kept shooting up afterwards, I did water changes, added beneficial bacteria. No dice. They were floating near the top last night. Seemed like they had swim bladder. This morning they seem dead and covered in this white film. What happened?

Antibiotics affecting beneficial bacteria?

Posted: 17 Jan 2020 12:34 AM PST

I've suddenly just lost my two telescopes to dropsy. No initial symptoms, seemingly overnight they swelled and pineconed. Tofu several days ago, and Squid last night. They were euthanised in clove oil, as I have never had success in saving fish with dropsy once they reach the pinecone stage, and the poor buggers looked miserable. I have two ranchus left, and I do not want to lose them.

My understanding is that dropsy is usually brought on by a bacterial infection that takes hold because the fish is stressed; from poor water, over feeding, or a myriad of reasons.

Water quality is not my issue, tests come back as 0-0-20, for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate respectively, and my pH is 7. Over feeding is not my issue, they get fed every other day, and its good quality sinking pellets, bloodworms, or fresh veggies. I am thinking that the stress comes from the introduction of new fish, as Dumpling and Squid were added into Tofu and Soy Sauce's tank after a 3 week quarantine period. There was no bullying, no fluctuations in water params or fish behaviour.

I am in the process of adding salts to the tank, and was wondering if there would be a benefit to treating with KanaPlex, or a similar antibiotic, to prevent anything taking hold of my Ranchus.

My question is if I treat with an antibiotic in my main tank, will it also kill off the beneficial bacteria in my filter system that manages my nitrogen cycle? I've only used it in temporary hospital tanks before, where it wouldn't have been an issue. The last thing I need is to crash my main tank.

Any advice regarding antibiotics or dropsy appreciated. TIA
