Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:39 PM PST I have some buddies on a discord chat (great people, by the way) that are saying that a 55 gallon tank is too small for 3 fancy (I'm thinking either fantail, petstore fancy, or ryukin) goldfish is too small? I can go up to a 75 gallon tank, but would prefer to stay on the smaller side. Do goldfish really take that much space? Also, I would be running a sponge filter and a canister filter in whatever tank I choose to get. The goldfish would all be purchased as babies or juveniles, so whatever tank I get will be good for them at least until year 1. What I'm asking for is for whenever they become adults and require all that extra space. I have experience keeping bettas and other tropical community fish, I have 3 bettas in their own 10 gallons, and a 29 gallon community with 2 bristlenose plecos, 3 endlers live bearers as well as 4 white cloud minnows. All tanks are planted. This would be my first time owning goldfish. Any and all advice appreciated. TL;DR: 3 fancy goldfish in a 55 gallon too small? 60? 65? 75? [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:32 PM PST Soooo first time with goldfish, I got 5 goldfish for a 65 gallon tank, I ordered them off of Ebay from a seller with fantastic reviews. I got a fan tail black moor, fan tail panda, and 3 butterfly telescopes. I had them for about a week and then I went in to feed them one night, and my largest calico spontaneously did not have any eyes. I removed him from the tank and set up a hospital tub, with 2 filters and some bamboo, and I've been hand feeding him and doing a 70% water change every other day. I also have been adding a little paraguard to help him heal. My questions are: 1. Is this more likely to be an attack? Or pop eye? He was the largest of the fish and his eyes did not look cloudy so I'm kind of confused. There was a small ammonia spike when I added the fish It was between .25 and .5 but I did a large water change and it has been going down steadily. Nitrates staying between 10-20 and I do small vacuums of poo regularly on top of the weekly water change. Nitrites forever 0 btw. 2. How do I tell if there is an infection in his missing eyes? So far he is eating well and active? 3. Other than keeping pristine water conditions and keeping him well fed, is there anything else I can do to help him heal 4. Should I put him back with the other fish if he does heal? I have read that blind goldfish can still leave reasonably happy lives and that they are social creatures. [link] [comments]
Rescuing a goldfish! - need help with accomodation Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:20 PM PST After striking up a conversation with a college friend, apparently he has a goldfish he doesn't want. He also said that he was holding it in a small bowl, and the companion died a while ago. I am more than willing to take it from him, as he said he would "dump it in the local river". I currently have a Walstad tank up and running, and I'm not sure whether it'll be suitable, or whether I need a new tank. I am NOT going to let him "dump it in the local river". The poor thing. Are ranchus really that fragile?!!? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:26 PM PST I have a pearlscale and just got a medium-sized ranchu for my second fancy (at max stock now in my 30g). I figured care would be similar to the pearlscale, another somewhat fragile, slow clumsy fish. I knew about wen trimming though and got one without an extreme wen. Well... now I've heard they're "extremely delicate" and I don't know what that means. Naturally I'm freaking out. How delicate are they, exactly? What does that mean? Am I going to kill this poor fish if I make a mistake and go a day late on a water change, for example? Or does "delicate" just mean they're not as hardy as single tails, and can't be housed with faster/more aggressive fish? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:22 PM PST I have a 25g tank with a few live plants and one fantail. My filter is dying and I want him to have one that will last longer than a year. What do y'all suggest? [link] [comments]

Please help: Need quick goldfish advice Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:12 PM PST I am very frustrated with the internet right now. When you look up what to do about aquariums it is page after page of people carrying on, explaining nitrogen cycles and too small tanks etc and they rarely give useful advise that isn't an entire how to book. I have a 20 gallon tank. 1 goldfish. 4 years old. 5 inches long w/tail. Clean tank. I did a water change recently and cleaned it really well. He started laying on the bottom, listless for the last few days. Stopped feeding. PH high, but same as it's always been. Low ammonia, no nitrites and ammonia. Maybe beginning of nitrates. Now water is hazy. I've been doing big water changes and he perks up. Gave him a couple peas yesterday. I'm leaving tomorrow and don't trust my husband to take care of him. I put him in a bucket with a bubbler because the tank seems to be cycling. Is there anything I can do to save my beloved goldfish? I feel so bad. [link] [comments]

2-day FedEx shipping? (from Goldfish Island) Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:23 AM PST I chose this shipping method because it was less expensive than overnighting and still had a live arrival guarantee, but now I'm reading you should only overnight fish. I live 90 minutes from the store so I thought it would be safe (I just hate driving into Boston--hate it, hate it, hate it--it causes me immense stress, or I would have picked her up myself). Should I cancel and reorder and just pick her up? Or have other people here shipped 2-day without issues? The fish is an adult 4-4.5 inch ranchu, if that matters. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:20 AM PST I am a preschool teacher and have a class fish, which is why this is a 911! I need to tell my kids whats up!! My fish is currently lying on the bottom of the tank on his side, unresponsive, not moving. But I don't know if he's dead or not. He was wobbling side to side and then would snap out of it but then he just didn't. Petco told me to add aquarium salt to his tank in case it was an air bubble so we did that but there was no change. After google research, I'm afraid it could be swim bladder because he has not been eating or just stress shock or just dead. But I don't want to bury him alive! Please help me! [link] [comments]
Hi there! I've got some questions Posted: 02 Jan 2020 02:42 AM PST I'm picking up a 36g tomorrow in which I would like to house two fancy goldfish. I know that's about the smallest I can go, so what I want to know is which variety of fancy goldfish are the smallest at maturity? I honestly can't decide on a favorite and to be honest, if it comes down to choosing based on size, that's fine. My other question is I would like to plant the tank. What plants are the least tasty/grow fast enough to not be decimated? What kind of enrichment do they enjoy? I have filter media from a cycled tank to jumpstart my cycle. Heater is coming because we don't have heat in the house and without it the tank water will drop into the 50's. Thanks in advance! Eta I'm not a complete fish newbie- I have a community tank (mostly platys) that I've had established due about a year, and years ago I kept African cichlids. I'm just new to goldfish. Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:11 AM PST Feeding fish lettuce, cucumber, grapes, etc keeps the water a lot clearer. Fish in their natural habitat would have to find they're own food so I'm wondering is it sufficient just to feed fish the right fruit n veggies? [link] [comments] |
