Well.. I've got some not so good news

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:25 PM PST

So, I've noticed my black moor seems to be bleeding underneath his gills (his underbelly section) and his fin areas seem like they're bleeding too.. is there a reason why?? I've tried to look it up and got ammonia levels are too high in the tank, though my other fantail doesnt seem to be affected by it just yet. Amy help would be fantastic.

Feeling gutted.

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 07:04 AM PST

I've only been in the fish hobby for just over 4 months and in that time I've posted here quite a bit, you guys have been super helpful.

Lenny didnt make it through the night, he had recovered briefly from dropsy but then it hit him like a tonne of bricks a few days later. He's only been around for 4 months but I feel like I've just lost a family pet that's been around for 15 years and nobody except my mum seems to understand how gutted I am.

I'm sorta at the point where I dont know if I can keep having fish and inadvertently have them die in my care too soon. I've distanced myself from my LFS because I don't particularly like their advice or their attitude. I also tend to delete these posts soon after because they're a bit of a downer to see, so I apologise for that.

Someone else had left very kind words on my previous post regarding their beginners experience with losing fish, I'm just worried that if I keep this up I'm going to see fish come and go every few months despite my effort to do everything right by them without getting any better.

If I do get another goldie -which I know I will out of guilt for the black moor that's now on its own- I think that I will probably steer clear of orandas/fancy goldfish.

Can anyone suggest suitable companions for the black moor other than a fancy?

My mum suggested adding a dose of anti bacterial to the tank when introducing new fish. I held off for ages getting Lenny a pal in fear of seeing what happened to Bart happening to him and now it has. Is what she suggested a good idea? My mum also advised I get enzyme and remedy aquarium balls, has anyone here used them to help with fish/tank health?

Sorry for the rant and thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply or read. I'm already missing Lenny's welcoming wiggles when I got home.

There's an intense feeling of wanting to give up fish as I dont know if this is normal beginners experience or if I'm just not that great at looking after them. As discussed previously all of my parameters were sitting at perfect numbers, I thought I had the nack of all this fish business.

Need help with fungal growth - how to cure (photos included)

About a week ago, I came home from work and this is what my fish looked like.

https://imgur.com/a/0oMq3Le/

He had all the color stripped from one side of his body and he was extremely lethargic. I came to the conclusion that an algae eater that I had (now rehomed) had been eating his slime coat. He seemed lethargic and didn't want to eat, so I did some light Google'ing and decided to leave him be and allow his slime coat to come back on its own.

Since then, it's been downhill. This is what he looks like now:

He has a small, but thick patch of what appears to be white cotton on the affected area. Immediately upon discovering this, I dosed the tank for a few days with Paraguard. After some research, I discovered it was fungal and Paraguard wasn't likely to work. I stopped that and did two 10 second Methylene Blue dips on two consecutive days. The first dip, the fungus came right off. It grew back overnight. The second dip did nothing.

Panicking, I treated the tank with Kanaplex last night and today he doesn't seem any better.

What do you guys think I should do? I am considering doing a salt bath/dip to kill it off, but I am afraid he's too weak to survive it. I can continue the Methylene Blue as well. I am open all suggestions and advice. I really don't want my fish to die.

Please help!

Manual filtering

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:59 PM PST

I have a very big satellite dish in the garden and a big bucket in the ground under a tree. I don't want to mess about with pumps and aerators. The smaller one will be for breeding frogs, the larger one mostly for birds and perhaps a couple of comets. Would some Elodea, little water snails and manually bucketing the water out and pouring it through a sand or charcoal filter once a week be ok? I also have an air compressor line close buy from a workshop and could easily give both a good aeration once a day.

Thanks for any help.

Goldfish stuck in ornament

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:20 AM PST

Hi guys, so my goldfish decided it was a fun idea to get his head stuck in an ornament (now been removed and binned) and to get him out we had to wriggle him a bit. Now a few of his once black scales are kind of see through and he looks damaged. He's swimming okay and eating but is there anything i can do to help him heal? I feel so bad :(

How long can an aquarium filter be off for?

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:06 AM PST

I've seen multiple different answers online so figured I would ask here. I have multiple sponge filters in the tank working with aeration too. I need to turn my big electric filter off for a bit, it will he kept underwater still in the tank. It was added a few weeks ago so I don't want to jeopardise any bacteria in there. How long will it be okay for if the filter is switched off? Thanks!
