Daryll feeling a little "not" hungry

This is my new roommate Daryll. He hasn't been very hungry this past week. But it is winter time so perhaps that's whats wrong?I'd like to hear what you have to say about it.Maybe I should change up the food?
I do keep the heat off the room so it gets cold. Normally Daryll loves food and instantly goes for it, but recently he just spits it out or just very very slowly eats it. He has been growing a lot in just this month that I got him.

My little guy Simmy - what’s the deal with cannibalism? Is he big enough that I could get another one?

Still confused about GH, KH, and salt in softened water.

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:43 AM PST

I'm so confused! Water chemistry is hard, and I'm still not getting it. Some help, please.

So I have softened well water. We add salt. I have the API test kit, and my GH is 17.9, KH is 53.7. Does GH not take into consideration sodium chloride? (I assume KH does not) If it did, then the added salt would drive up the GH. It just seems counterintuitive that adding salt would cause these numbers to be low.

So, next question is: How do you test the amount of salt (sodium chloride) specifically, in the water? Do I need to buy a refractometer? I have a hydrometer from when I used to brew my own beer, can I use this?

I would like to use my own softened water for water changes instead of buying gallons and gallons, but I don't want to hurt my axies.

I also purchased some Equilibrium to raise the GH, but have held off on using it until I know exactly what the hell I'm doing. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks~

My axie's "land adventures"

Posted: 23 Nov 2019 02:57 PM PST

So, I've had two axolotl for about 6 years in total. One is just over 6, one is nearly 3.

The 3 year old has a habit of doing something a little odd. I acquired a large aquarium previously used for turtles from a Petco that closed when I set up my environment. It took a lot of work to ensure tank conditions were appropriate esp. in regards to temp.

Anyway, for his entire lifespan nearly, he will occasionally climb on a rocky, shallow water type thing I got with the aquarium and will climb higher on to land to just sort of sit there, sometimes up to a minute nearly before going back into the water.

At first I was really concerned that he may be morphing and temporarily covered that section so he could not go up there. He didn't climb any plants or show any signs of morphing.

I stopped and he to this day shows no signs of morphing.

My question is, is this something that other owner's have experienced? I've never forced him to do this and it almost seems he just enjoys being on land for afaict the same reason other animals enjoy getting wet. He's a healthy axie and spends 95% of his day behaving normally, but does routinely make trips up that rock. It's always confused me and I sometimes ask others if theirs does this (w/o being a morphing sign).

I think I might have guessed her gender wrong... Can anyone help me confirm?

The right side of my axolotl’s gills almost looks like it’s falling off? I love him so much and I’d be devastated if anything happened to him. Is he alright?
