Can I get an ID? Hitchhiker has the body of a slug, a little trunk like an elephant and like half a snail shell on his back.

I’m neck deep in a tank swap pt. 2

Posted: 18 Sep 2019 10:21 PM PDT

So I've had to re silicone part of the overflow and as such, do not have fish, coral or rock in as of yet. The water is still pretty cloudy and I'd like for that to clear a bit.

Everyone is safe and happy in a back up tank for the moment.

here's 2 shots of the tank both empty and with water going in. Also my doggo Pixel with a good sit.

Bully fish in a nano tank...suggestions?

Posted: 18 Sep 2019 06:27 PM PDT

So I have my first saltwater tank all set up, cycled, and have had 2 fish plus some hermit crabs and snails in there now for 2 weeks. I also just scored a variety of corals from an awesome dude on craigslist for dirt cheap. The tank is a fluval evo 13.5.

Now from lurking around here a while, I think I need to warn you all to brace yourselves...I bought my fish from PETCO. GASP! Lol. But really, I'm on a super tight budget, and the fish at the Petco's near me have looked really healthy. And my two have been so far. They both settled in without any issues, they're eating well, they're active, their colors look great.

However. I guess in keeping with their reputation, their fish were mislabeled and I didn't know enough to realize that. This is my first salt tank, after many years of freshwater tanks. I thought I did my homework but apparently not well enough, because I ended up with two fish I didn't intend to have, and one is a major bully.

So first I bought a royal gramma. Or so I thought. I had wanted one and they had one at a good price. I didn't realize the little differences this guy had to the royals I saw online when I was researching...my fish is actually a false royal gramma, a dottyback. Which apparently, are aggressive and territorial. And while I really like this little dude, he's active, bright, healthy, and cocky as hell, when I added fish number two, he claimed the whole tank for himself I guess.

So fish number two. I also wanted a clownfish.

Off to petco I go. The associate shows me this one clownfish with a lot of spunk and personality, not shy in the least. I loved him. Brought him home. Right away he goes to the black divider wall between the filter and the tank, and has mostly been hanging out there for two weeks now. He ventures out mostly only when there's food, otherwise, it appears he's decided to host the intake vent.

As I said, both fish were mislabeled. This guy didn't look like the standard clown but was pretty light orange anyway so I figured he was just some random variety. Nope, he appears to be a maroon clown. So I'll definitely have to upgrade tanks eventually since I see they tend to get bigger and more mean than regular clowns.

Despite being a mean maroon clown, he appears to totally be intimidated by my super cocky dottyback. I don't see the dotty actually attacking him (he did nip his fins day one but then that's it for physical contact) but the busybody dotty will constantly glare at him from across the tank, or come up within a couple inches and just glare at him, and I can tell it's making my clown uneasy. I feel really bad the clown is just nervously sticking to his corner.

I tried removing them both during my water change a few days ago, and rearranged all the rocks and redirected the water flow to try to create a new, neutral territory, with hopes that having a fresh, level playing ground now that they were both settled in would help even the score and they could both pick some rocks and just be sour neighbors. I really tried to set it up where it'd be easy to each have territory they'd like and be able to stay apart...I put my rock with the big tunnel in it that the dotty loves on one side with more rocks that I arranged into caves like he likes. Then I made the other side a pile of rocks with no caves, but put my frogspawn pieces over there since I've read some clownfish will enjoy hosting frogspawn. Without caves, I hoped it wouldn't make my dotty too upset to just give the clown those rocks. There are essentially two separate formations, with a couple inches of just plain ol sand in between.

The first day or so, the dottyback, who put up an amazingly ferocious fight when I caught him to remove from the tank, decided he was petrified of me now (he was sizing me up before that...lol) so he stayed hidden in his favorite cave as soon as he found where I moved it. The clown LOVED it. He was swimming all over the tank, just going around looking at everything having a good old time. But now, mean ol dotty is back to his cocky self and is being a busy body again, super active just going around micromanaging everything in the tank. He's a terrible boss, you'd never want to work for him. He breathes down the necks of the corals, the hermit crabs, glares at the snails, even stares critically at the rocks. And now my poor clownfish, who should be an asshole himself, is back up in his corner. When dotty boss swings by to inspect my clown, the clown does little false charges, or presses himself up tight against his wall. Dotty just glares a few seconds and then goes about his rounds.

I don't want to stress my clown. He seems like he's currently still doing alright but he's obviously not very happy with this situation, nor am I. I wanted to see if there were other suggestions before I go trying to return one of the fish to the store. Should I just give it more time? Maybe add more live/dry rock so there's even more coverage, maybe stack higher too so the clown can feel more secure? Maybe the dotty might back off a bit if he doesn't always have a pretty clear view of the clown whenever he's out of his cave?

Looking forward to your replies.

"New" to me Biocube 29

Posted: 18 Sep 2019 08:47 PM PDT

Just got a biocube 29 in great condition for a great price. The lighting is all white right now and I saw they have a blue bulb replacement for the hood. Does anyone have any pictures of a blue/white light combo in theirs? I won't be able to upgrade to a high end LED light for a few more months. Anyone have any other tips or easy mods for this?

Any idea what's growing on my zoa polyps making them stay closed and what to do about it?

Wish me luck, getting a 180g acrylic cheap. Going to tear it town and completely restart it. Going to add a 75g sump. Never had a tank this large. Might be a bit due to being broke atm and I still needing a return pump and skimmer big enough for it. Hoping to get it started in the next year.

So both the clowns died...

Posted: 18 Sep 2019 07:15 PM PDT

I wrote here a few days back about two clowns that had disappeared one weeks ago and the other recent. I took the whole tank apart and I couldn't even find the bodies I think the hermit crabs got to them. The tank levels are all fine so it must of had been weeks ago.

Any ideas why this happened? I'm really upset they where the first fish I added to this tank and this only happened to my clowns not any other fish....
