29 gallon biocube start up.

Posted: 26 Sep 2019 08:08 PM PDT

I am researching modifications for a 29 gallon biocube. I want to set up a dedicated LPS tank. Any advice on all equipment is welcome. I'm not completely new to reef aquariums but it has been over a decade since I had one. I currently have a 75 gallon planted discus tank. I understand water parameters and the necessity of good husbandry I am just incredibly dated when it comes to contemporary equipment.

Corals for 10 gallon

Posted: 26 Sep 2019 04:13 PM PDT

What are your favorite corals for a 10 gallon? Something that is beginner friendly and would be comfortable under a hipargero aqua knight. Thanks guys!!!!!

PS: would you recommend having a xenia island as well as a different island for GSP?

Background ideas

Posted: 26 Sep 2019 07:44 PM PDT

Does anyone have any ideas I could use to get a background on my tank? Unfortunately one of my many mistakes I had forgotten to paint/put on a background. It's already pressed against the wall and set up with everything (including fish) inside, so moving it isnt really an option.

Also is there any way I could paint the stand as well? Or would the fumes end up killing my fish? Any help is appreciated

Cleaning black sand

Posted: 26 Sep 2019 07:08 PM PDT

Newb here btw just looking for a little clarification and tips if anyone has an applicable one. I have a nano with black sand which i love. So far its been pretty enjoyable moving slow and steady with the tank but i get these tiny bits of tan colored matter sitting on the sand. Just slightly larger than the very fine sand. It almost looks like bits of the man-made rock structure that broke off but im honestly not sure if this is a type of detritus, rock, fish poop (i have one damsel) or something else. Fwiw when i pinch the pieces i picked out they feel pretty solid.

Guy at my LFS said i need more beneficial bacteria to break this stuff down. He then said there is a difference between nitrifying bacteria and this other bacteria that would be present in live rock. He said the bacteria in commercial bottled products to cycle the tank would not help, but live rock would.

I thought they were the same bacteria types, just different methods.

Just wondering if this is true or i just need to find the perfect sifting mesh or just get sand a different color which doesnt draw the eye to inevitable debris.

Oh, and would the goby help with this or do they mostly stir the sand up similar to a siphon?

Thank you :)

How to tell if angel will be fine in a reef?

Posted: 26 Sep 2019 06:23 PM PDT

I am working on setting up my 55 gallon reef, and I'm looking at either a flame angel or coral beauty. I know that angels are hit or miss with corals, but is there a way I can tell how it will act before getting it from the LFS? Also if it does go after coral when I get one, will it be obvious if it's bad or how can I tell?
