Has anyone raised a Dwarf Axolotl from the time it hatched? Trying to decide if this is dwarfism. 5 weeks 2 days post hatch and Baby Yoshi is still very small and different shaped.

I want an axolotl, but I have some questions.

Posted: 22 Sep 2019 09:02 PM PDT

Recently I've been doing research on axolotls, and they've really peaked my interest. Such a unique animal!

I think I'd like to have one, and I have done my own research about them but I would really appreciate input from this community.

And just a disclaimer--I've never owned any sort of aquatic pet, so please ELI5

  • How much would an entire tank set-up for one axolotl cost? (I mean with EVERYTHING I would need)
  • At what age is the prime age in which I should buy one? (The younger the better for me--I wanna see it grow)
  • What is the smallest healthy tank size for one axolotl? (I have a small room so the smaller the better)
  • What kind of water would I use? Pretty sure I can't or shouldn't use straight tap.

I'd greatly appreciate your answers!

My boys sharing their pellets

Posted: 23 Sep 2019 08:31 AM PDT

My axolotl’s new tank is finally looking like it’s almost done cycling... how’s this set up look? I want lots for him to do/sit on & interact with but worried since they’re bottom dwellers he might not be able to get around the floor. Shall I take out the face thing? Or the moss balls? Thanks!

Thoughts on tank mates? Is it possible to have a snail or maybe a pleco with these guys?

I really liked how my re-setup turned out, so wanted to share. There's actually 2 axies in here!

Help - gills curled at very tips, very pale, some bits look like they’re bleeding? I cannot seem to figure out what is wrong with his water. Ammonia is 0 and nitrate is 5.0. Temp is 70 F. Haven’t tested hardness but my tap water tends to be very hard.

How much food per feeding?

Posted: 22 Sep 2019 07:13 PM PDT

Hi! So my axolotl is about 4 months, I feed him every other day. Mostly pellets but we mix it up sometimes with an earthworm or bloodworms. We give him 4 or 5 pellets. I'm worried I'm underfeeding him, my boyfriend is worried we're over feeding him. Any thoughts? Thanks!

New to the sub - care to share your tank setups? While it seems everyone loves to show off their guys/gals, how about we get some pics of their environments? I’d share mine but it’s not exciting... yet.

recurrent white fungus

Posted: 22 Sep 2019 02:19 PM PDT

this summer, although i've kept my water temp pretty consistent, it's slipped to slightly warmer temps (e.g., 67) and due to stress, my axolotl has a white fungus infection on his gills for the second time in three months.

how do i stop this from happening? i need to buy aquarium salt (which kinds are safe??) and have heard of the use of tea leaves (as opposed to salt baths). would you guys recommend any of this, or something else entirely?
