The Mystery of the Missing Axolotl Poop

Posted: 21 Sep 2019 08:28 PM PDT

This is embarrassing even to share but I do so with the hope that maybe another confused Axolotl owner like myself will find it or maybe some of you guys can just laugh at it.

I purchased an Axolotl baby almost two months ago now and its already quadrupled in size. I bought a water chiller to keep the temperature in his enclosure perfect. I bought decorations for him to use, little hiding spots, fake plants, and a few different kinds of food. I've been trying to give him the best life imaginable. I do weekly water changes and have been checking the water quality with a test kit routinely.

I figured I was doing a pretty good job. But there was one thing I hadn't given any thought: How come I have yet to see this magnificent creature's excrement? I was watching a youtube channel talking about the challenges of taking care of one and there was a small segment about cleaning their poop. I started to get nervous because I realized I've never actually seen mine poop nor have I seen his poop. I started searching around his tank and once again I found nothing. There was one area I hadn't checked though. I bought a hollow Mayan temple decoration, to try and go with the meso-American tank theme, and he always sleeps in there. I lifted it up to check and sure enough all of his poop was in there. He had literally been pooping in the same spot for who knows how many weeks and they were all more or less preserved, I cleaned it all up and I'm retesting the water now but for anyone like me who thinks "maybe the poop just disintegrates and the filter has been catching it or the siphoning has been picking up those small particles" - you may want to search harder.

Begginer keeper - My Axolotl just ate the rubber grip off the feeding tongs

Posted: 22 Sep 2019 01:00 AM PDT

So i was feeding my juevenile axolotl some blood works with the feeding tongs, i drop the worms in front of her face, and instead of eating them she lunges at the feeding tongs as i slowly retract them from the water so not to disturb the blood worms in the water and they stay grouped up. But this greedy girl must have mistaken the white grip for a worm because she lungs at it and bites it pulling it off the tongs and instantly swallows it and now i'm in a complete panic on what to do, will she be able to poop it out or do i need to do something?

Hi - brand new to the sub, and a brand new owner today. Is it normal for them to “charge” at the side of the tank? My new guy is getting up some speed and slamming into the wall of the tank.

Is 20gal long too small of a tank to have 2 axolotls? This is throttle, I’ve had him for about 3 months & I found a black spotted about the same size as throttle but the guy at the pet store is saying my tank is too small & one of them could kill the other, opinions? would I need a bigger tank?

Guys I kinda need help from experts

Posted: 21 Sep 2019 10:57 AM PDT

I'm getting my first axolotl and I went on Pet md and they said that if I put fine sand on the bottom of the tank it should be fine. But on a preliminary trip to the pet store and after extensively talking to the head employee there they very strongly cautioned against any sand whatsoever. At the pet store they suggested slate on the bottom. I still want the tank to look good so and I don't want to leave the tank bottom bare and also I don't like how slate looks, but I will do what I have to do. Can you guys tell me if there is any special type of sand that I can use, or if I should just go bare or with slate. Thanks!

Yesterday I got 3 baby axolotls

Posted: 21 Sep 2019 10:53 AM PDT

As the title says, I got 3 babies yesterday. I placed them in the tank I had set up, and all is well. They're eating fine and are exploring the area. This morning i wake up and can only find 2 babies. The third one is no where to be seen, it's not behind anything, or under anything. Should I be worried? I cant feed the baby if I cant find it
