There's got to be a better way. What types of leaves do you guys use?

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 11:28 PM PDT

Despite all the trees on my property i'm buying leaves from my LFS, and it seems ridiculous since i'm just ya know, raking and tossing leaves by the bag full. I saw someone mention that oak leaves are ok in tanks but does it matter which type of oak it is? Can I use any other type of leaf? I would wait until fall and harvest naturally fallen leaves, boil them, and then put them in the dehydrator. We do not spray our trees with any types of pesticides. I live in MI.

Grocery store Banana Leaves?

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:19 PM PDT

Has anyone tried banana leaves from their grocery store? the package says 100% natural and the ingredient is only banana leaf. I'm looking into using them to make some biofilm.

Crystal red shrimp stunted growth?

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:53 PM PDT

2 broods hatched in late June, it seems like most or all of them are still alive. Some are growing steadily, but a lot of them aren't much bigger than the ones that hatched 5 days ago. Also according to the formula for how long it takes eggs to hatch they should have all taken 26 days but they all took 29 days. I have a thermometer on the corner opposite the heater and they both show 24 degrees c.

Can shrimp growth be stunted? How do I fix it?

Dear God Help

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 04:52 PM PDT

Hey! So I just got a 55 gallon fish tank today and was planning on setting it up and putting in shrimp after it cycled. Unfortunately, due to a mislead gesture of good will my dad got me 11 ghost shrimp before I was able to set up my tank. Is there anything I can do to keep these little buddies alive until my tank is ready for them?

Shrimp in Community tank Question.

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:25 PM PDT

I have around 28 cherry shrimp in a 20 gallon with 8 small tetras and 3 cherry barbs. Would I need to feed extra flake food to make it to the bottom? Or drop on algae tablets every now and then? Or will the shrimp be able to survive off small scraps and bio film?

Should mineral balls only be used in RO water?

Would adding mineral balls to tap water only make things worse?

Separate nursery jar to keep fry safe? (Or: Help! I saw a planaria just after I got home with shrimp babies!)

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 06:26 PM PDT

Edit: Note—I am new to inverts. I've had larger tanks, always with some kind of fish that was all too happy to eat any small wriggling creature it could find so.. yeah. I'm also new to dealing with planaria.

So, I have a lovely 1+g walstad jar all set up. I've greatly enjoyed watching my two nerites happily scooting around (I love their lil munchy mouths!) and I finally decided to go get them a few little shrimp buddies. I got 3 neocaridina, and was thrilled to see that the lfs guy had scooped up a few tiny blue velvet babies into my bag!

Got home and set the shrimp bag down near their new home, and that's when I saw.. it. A planaria. Just cruising along atop the sand... (And yes, I'm 1000% certain it's planaria. Visible eyes, flared flat head, devil-may-care attitude, etc.) I dashed for the turkey baster to try and suck the bugger out, but it had disappeared by the time I got back to the jar and I haven't seen it again.

Now I'm afraid for my tiny bonus fry. Are planaria very ambitious hunters? Do they stay near the bottom/substrate? There's a bunch of hornwort and duckweed up by the top of my jar and a couple bunches of ruffly subwassertang around the bottom. I can also add some java moss if more floaty-hidey stuff would be good, but would they be safe?

My other thought—which could be the dumbass product of a paranoid, inexperienced, shrimp-drunk mind—is to set them up in a separate ~1L jar temporarily until I sort out the planaria situation.

The tentative plan: Scoop the bigger shrimp into the main jar (after drip-acclimating), then throw some sand, a marimo and a thicc wad of java moss into the 1L with the babies and diluted lfs water (fry are too small for net) and keep them there until I sort out the planaria situation?

Is this stupid? I.e., more dangerous to the fry than the single planaria I've actually seen? Would the plants be enough to absorb any spikes?

Looking to switch food.

Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:48 AM PDT

I keep cherries in a spec v. I use a glass tube and dish to minimize food being everywhere. I currently feed Fluval bug bites for shrimp. They seem to like it alot. Oddly they wont go near algae wafers ( i tried hikari and omega) Basically I want to switch to something less dusty. What I feed now gets kicked up. I already have the filter flow as low as I can make it. I was thinking a larger pellet/wafer would be better
