Here is the place to post questions about pest ID, coral/fish ID, your cycle, or any other questions that generally wouldn't start up a conversation. If you have an interesting or unique question please create a new thread so everyone can discuss it in length!

These are some great resources for ID's of pests/algae.

[help] Whats the reason that many people get tired of the hobby and how to avoid it?

Posted: 02 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT

It seems to be generally accepted that many people get tired of the hobby. Mostly this is seen as a positive thing for newcomers because then you can buy used equipment cheap. To me it just gives me a bad vibe, why do so many people quit? And how does one avoid it?

Tagging this as help because of there is no general discussion one.

CC Gold Torch - do you know the song?

Can anyone explain why my clowns are ripping off each nodule(?) on my hammer coral? They live in it most of the time, but I've just seen them pulling it apart, but not eating it.

Help with new setup

Posted: 02 Aug 2019 04:39 PM PDT

I'm looking for some advice regarding my new setup. I just bought a saltwater tank from someone and trying to get a handle of things but unfortunately I'm new to this so I don't know what I'm doing.

I have a 55gal tank (48" long) with just rock, sand and 4 small fish (and hermit crabs) at the moment.
We want to start adding anemones and more fish.

I currently have a Fluval FX4 and an Aqueon 48" Strip Light (120v/40watt/60hz)..

MY QUESTION is - I have a Reef Octopus 1000 HOB Skimmer that I'm not using yet. A few of my friends told me if I hang the skimmer and get a blower (one of the magnetic fan looking things) I can get rid of the Fluval. Is that true?

Also, I know I need to replace that light to be able and start adding anemones. Any suggestions on something that isn't TOO expensive?

Will a RFA “stick” to a near-vertical rock? Looking for coral suggestions to place where the green zoas currently are. PAR is somewhere around 200-260.
