Evening light mode is my favorite

Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:35 PM PDT

My light wasn’t strong enough for the first plants I used so I swapped them out with some that will hopefully grow better.

Rescaped after I moved. It’s a little dirty, but I like it more than my last setup.

Seeking submerged & emersed moss comparison pictures

Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:32 PM PDT

As the title states, I am seeking submerged & emersed pictures for comparison to decide on what additional mosses to grow in my new setup.]

I have weeping moss and flame moss, but would like to see what a few others might look like.

Any pictures and/or links appreciated!

Need some cheering up over algae issue/possible advice.

Posted: 06 Aug 2019 07:31 PM PDT

Sadly my carpeted 20g has been taken over by cyanobacteria, and possibly my other tanks. I'm just really upset that it'll never really be gone unless I use antibiotics or try the 3 day method (where you turn off all light for 3 days to eliminate growth). If I wanted to i could turn down the temp so it would grow slower, but I have tetras, corys, ect. It wouldn't cause much of a difference. I hope I can find a way to cheer up about it, but it's just really a kick to my motivation for aquarium keeping.

Hi reddit, I’m trying to setup a Walstad tank. Can someone tell me if this single LED is sufficient?

Are serpentine rocks and ore-containing river rocks safe for a Walstad tank?

Posted: 07 Aug 2019 01:14 AM PDT

I know serpentine leaches arsenic, but I read it gets worse with more frequent water changes. But does it not leach any arsenic if you do the walstad method and only add a bit of water to replenish what evaporates off? I'm interested in using serpentine not just for looks, but also because I read somewhere that it also releases minerals like magnesium and calcium into the water, which is beneficial. I was wanting to use serpentine because it's among of the prettier rocks I have from hikes, and with out a mineral-providing rock I might have to buy supplements (trying to avoid spending money if I can find/build/make/thrift for).

I also have river rocks that contain veins of what appears to be iron ore, and others that appear to have veins of sandstone. Are these no-goes?

I have a ton of plants, one tiny snail and I hope to buy shrimp or fish soon. My tank is 2-3 gallons, depending on how much volume landscaping takes up.my tank has been cycling for at least 3 months now. I am currently aiming for only adding water as it evaporates, and doing it with tap water that has been left to sit for 24 hrs and/or usually treated with a cheap water conditioner designed to make tap water safe for aquariums.

I'm getting into planted tanks that are low maintenance, very low tech. I have a vagabond snail named Penelope who came for free with some underwater plants. I've got a desk lamp with 2 (seemingly) LED settings, one warm yellow light, one cold blue light; I don't know the wattage because I got it for free, but if it's any help it plugs into a wall socket using a USB insert into a wall charging box (USB to household electric outlet connected). It flexible so I can angle it or lower it right into the tank if necessary, and the light it diffused through a panel of texture fogged plastic. That's a whole other post though.

Thanks!
