Having a really hard time coping with my goldfish’s death Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:24 AM PDT Sort of an odd post for this group, but I thought you all might understand. My goldfish, Poe, died in a sort of freak accident two nights ago. I'm having a really hard time coping with it. I put sponge filters over my HOB intake tubes, to protect some of my other fish who were rubbing against it when they swam past. My little girl just wedged herself up into the sponge, and just got stuck there. The intake isn't so strong to have pulled her in, so she must've just went searching for food or maybe she was just curious. The hole was so small, I never would've thought she would've been able to get her head inside it. But she did. I do everything right with my fish. They have a huge, understocked tank with lots of filtration, appropriate substrate, a heater, an air stone, and very, very clean water. I even make sure I cover my siphon with mesh when I do a water change so there's no risk of them getting hurt. I didn't even know this was a possibility. In all my research I've never heard of a fish getting caught in a sponge filter. I feel terrible. It was my responsibility to look after her and I failed. She was so young, only about a year old. I can't believe she's gone. How do you all handle it when one of your fish passes away? Any support or advice is appreciated. [link] [comments]

Could overeating lead to suffocation of goldfish? Posted: 06 Aug 2019 10:24 AM PDT Has anyone heard of a case where overeating leads to the goldfish having swim bladder issues, then floats to the top so much (and on one of its side) that its gills/mouth cannot get enough oxygen and then basically suffocates to death? And if this is true, in such a scenario would dropping a net over the goldfish and basically forcing it to be contained well below water surface (or near the bottom of the tank etc) help save it long enough for the food issue to pass until it no longer needed to be artificially constrained? Is my tank big enough for any kind of goldfish? Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:55 AM PDT I recently came into possession of a 36 gallon corner tank and I'm looking to do something different with it. All of my other tanks are tropical and I was thinking about doing a tank with cold water fish, and I'm interested in a goldfish as a centerpiece fish with some white clouds or zebra or pearl danios to go with it. Is this a big enough tank for one or should I consider a different centerpiece? [link] [comments]
